Columbia, SC | I have an interesting situation. I'm in the army, and my job is an army musician. That's right. I play clarinet for the army. And I LOVE my job! However transporting the clarinet back and forth to work and gigs, it's getting mighty cold out there. And cold plus a wooden clarinet is NOT a good combination. So instead of having to work deals with the wife to drop me off in the morning or something like that, is there some way to heat the inside of your trunk to a reasonable temperature? (somewhere between 60 and 80). Even if someone knows of some sort of small 12v heater with a thermostat on it that'd be good. It's only needed for the winter and only when I'm bringing my instrument back and forth to work. Thanks.

Green Bay, WI United States | Not sure this is all about temp. but humidty is also a factor at these temps. I think a warm pack of some type and a humidty pack would let you go and play. Or put it in your jacket and allow enough time for it all to warm up. God Bless our armed forces. Hoooo Raaaa!!! |

| How far do you have to ride with it in your trunk? I would think an insulated box would be better for it. Take a plastic or metal box about 2" larger then your clarinet box and fill the sides with foam. Take some hard foam and glue it to the sides. I would think it would hold the warmth long enough to get to base. This should also control the humidity.
I am sure someone in a base shop would build a case for you. 
Thank you for your service to protect this great nation of ours. I remember riding on the back of my buddy's BSA to base back in the early 70's. |

| Alexi, to answer your original question, yes it is possible to provide some form of heat in the trunk. All you have to do is to go down you you local auto accessory supply store such as Pepboys and purchase a 12V seat warming pad that you can plug into the standard power outlet in the trunk, if you have a '08 or '09 you will need to get a Powerlet adapter allowing the use of standard 12V cigarette lighter style plugs, but otherwise it is just that simple. |

San Antonio, TX | Please be careful using the 12 Volt plug in the trunk. It is NOT switched with the key and will KILL your battery if left connected.
I love music...any music as long at it is well played. Enjoyed my time at NTSU (now University of North Texas) living in Bruce Hall (across from the Music Building). I am a long suffering guitar player myself.
Benny Goodman in 1982 or 83 played at a half time show at a football game for the school. Maynard Ferguson, Woody Herman and others would pickup new talent for their bands from NTSU from time to time.

Columbia, SC | Thanks for the ideas. Between this and another site, I'm gonna do one of two things.
1) Believe it or not, a google search on "heated clarinet case" pulls up a professional clarinetist in Texas who is an avid ST1300 rider and somehow convinced Gerbing to create something especially for his clarinets to keep them warm while riding to/from work with his clarinet in the topcase. So I'm trying to contact him and find out what he did and how it's holding up.
2) I've looked at heated things and found out that I can probably get a heated blanket pretty cheap. I think I can wrap the case in this and it'll be fine. Just need to make sure it doesn't get TOO hot.

Good way to set your trunk on fire. These units do not have a termostat, and now compbine that with a semi airtight space. POOOF
