who is also my AMSOIL dealer. I got 20w50 MA the last two times because of summer and the trip to the desert back in June/July. I guess he figured I was up for an oil change so he says "I've got 5qts of 20w50 in the truck for you." I cleared my throat and paused a second, then told him I was running 5w40 in there now for the winter. He says AMSOIL doesn't makde 5w40 for motorcycles and I said I know, but Rotella does.

I went on to explain that my motor has a distinct tick noise at start up when using 10w and especially 20w, but is not evident with the 5w. He then goes into the speil about AMSOIL is not suppose to do that, and I reemphasize it is apparently related to the weight of oil and I know what my ears hears.

I tell him that if AMSOIL will make a 5w40 for motorcycles I'd gladly get it, but until then, he'll have to wait till warmer weather comes for me to go back to 10w40 AMSOIL. I then patiently listen to all the 20,000 mile AMSOIL stories that the oil was better after then it was when it was new, or something like that. Hopefully we'll remain friends...

Isn't it kinda funny that when someone becomes a Amsoil dealer all of a sudden they are a "oil expert"

Wonder what would happen if Amsoil switched over and started selling condoms..............

Im wondering of the Rotella is good enough for you in the winter why go back to Amsoil in the summer? 5w40 works just as good in the summer....

I might stay with it, but for the greater part I was using AMSOIL because I didn't get the chatter I get with the semi-dino-syn oil gives my motor toward the time of an oil change. We'll have to wait and see....

If you want a really nice 5w40, try the Mobil Turbo Diesel. The tranny loves it and the motor is quiet.

VR - How many miles you up to with the blue jug. I've only put about 1200 on my first batch so far. Still sounds good, shifts good, and gear indicator is still working.

only about 1,700 on this one and it's the first time I've used it. It's really not made a big difference on the shift indicator, but I don't follow it anyways, but it does on the starting. It had begun being sparatic on the starting, often making me pull in the clutch even when it was in neutral. That would happen with both the Vic oil and AMSOIL, so far the Rotella has done it zero time, always starts right up if the transmission is in neutral without disengaging the clutch.

I'm on my 2nd oil change using R 5w40. So far great results. I've had more than a free starts in the morning at temps in the range of 34F-40F with no ticking.

I just tried the R 5w40 at my last change a few hundred miles ago. I have pretty heavy knocking for the first few seconds if it's been sitting overnight or longer. Anyone else have this or is it something I should have the dealer look into? It goes away in about 5 seconds or so, but it seems longer because I hear it. Otherwise, the motor runs nice and quiet once the hammering goes away.

Nohawg, just wondering if the anti-drainback valve on the filter is what is causing that. It could cause all the oil to drain out above the highest point of oil in the pan so it runs dry until the oil pressure is restored. Just a shot in the dark, but that's my guess. I use the WIX filter #51356 in mine. Just picked up a blue bottle of synthetic 5w-40 and gonna try it myself. I've been using amsoil the last few times with great results, but an oil change for under $35 is a deal to me!

did a 4000 mile blue jug change. Trans ad engine still smother than Vic oil at 1000 miles. I am sold on the blue jug, but will keep the mileage to 3-3500 miles. so cheap, why not

baadawg, thats the same filter I used. Can those things be bad from the factory?

A quality WIX filter isn't likely to be bad from the factory, but anything is possible. I'd probably try to change the filter only and see what happens. But then again, I'm a bit of a cheapskate.

Often when I start my bike after it sets a few days it will be "tap happy" for a few seconds....Id say its somewhat common. Doesnt last long.....and its always been like that, no matter what oil/filter combo I use.

Ive used Vic oil change kit, Castrol MC oil and EMGO filter and recently T6 Rotella and NAPA Gold oil filter.
