I'm a little confused...When I bought my 08 Vision Tour premium I had the dealorship install the stage 1/level 1 exhaust kit.  This included the Victory Performance Air Filter (looks a lot like a K&N).  The K&N web site claims these filters don't need to be cleaned but every 30,000 to 50,000 miles depending on driving enviroment.  The Victory manual calls for a new paper filter every 10,000 miles.

Called the dealer and asked the service rep how often my filter needed cleaning.  He said the same as the factory paper filter (10k) and they would do it as it took special cleansers and oils ($$).

Question #1:  How often does this high performance filter need to be cleaned?

Question #2:  Is there common cleaners or home methods I can use to clean the filter without paying the dealer for this service or ordering a cleaning kit?

I do know that their are special cleaning kits you can get on EBAY for K&N Filters that will pay for themselves after first maintenance. If it were me I would clean every 10K. Show the Vision the Love.

how to clean.. http://www.knfilters.com/cleaning.htm

as far as when it should be clean, i think that might depend on how dirty the areas are that you ride? 10000 miles for me in a city might be different if you lived on a farm? just an example..

I clean mine with an old K&N cleaner kit that I had from a few years back. It works like a charm.

I also clean my filter about every 5000 miles. Just because it doesn't look dirty doesn't mean that it isn't. We have TONS of pollen in the air right now. So much so that every morning the windshield on the car is coated with a layer of yellow powder. So, after the pollen dies down a bit I'll give it a good cleaning.

It's amazing how much better the bike runs with a clean air filter.

Mine does a little - I tend to think it is because of being caught in the rain several times...

The dirt the properly oiled filter will collect becomes saturated with the filter oil and becomes a part of the filtering media, making the gauze filter finer particles. The dirt makes the filter work better... to a point. If all of the gauze media is completely caked to the point of not being able to seen through (with a flashlight), the filter needs cleaning. I typically clean oiled gauze types of air filters every 30-50k, unless operated in very dusty conditions.

Even when dirty, an oiled gauze air filter will flow more air than the stock paper filter at 10k. I buy K&N type filters for the longer effective service life (economy), and better efficiency (performance) when dirty, over paper filters.

The way to clean them is to only use a water based cleaner (like K&N), spray the cleaner on, let it set. I like to gently tap the filter (edge only) to loosen the grunge. Gently rinse with low pressure water from the intake side, (like under a water faucet)never use high pressure water to clean the filter! Let it sun dry... never blow it dry with compressed air, you will tear or expand the openings in the weave of the gauze. Re-oil with the sticky (K&N) filter oil, I like the aerosol oil, I find it much easier to control the distribution and amount.

I had a mechanic ruin a K&N in one of my trucks... he ran it through with parts cleaner (dip), and blew it out with his air hose, and tore the sh!t out of the gauze, then put it back in dry. All of my vehicles have K&N or similar air filters, and in every case I only allow myself to do the filter maintenance.

I pulled the filter out and it has a fine wire mesh, but it's white.  All the pics of performance air filters I see are redish in color because of the oil they use.  I hope my dealer didn't screw me.

Because I never heard my vision run with the OEM exhaust, I'm now wondering how do I know if I got actually got the Stage 1/ Level mufflers or the EFI  update?

Same as mine, I inquired and they said it was preoiled and not to touch it. I really questioned that since as you, all my K&N filters were pink to red in colour from the oil.
Turns out they were wrong. I had to throw out the filter because the mesh had rusted and in one place broke allowing the gauge to squeeze through.
Dealer on had a paper filter, so thats what went back in
