I took a 200+ mile run down to south Alabama to see my mother for lunch on Sunday. I got off the big road and stopped for gas on the state hwy that runs 25 miles to her house. As I finished fueling up and fired up the 106, I see a wing go by headed my way. Maybe it's my imagination, maybe not, but the glance he gave me, I didn't like. It's a Sunday morning around 9 and no traffic. I decided to run along with him just for grins.
I had my half helmet with no comms on or I would'a called out to him for a chat. I start easing up to him and he starts easing on the throttle.
Now this is a nice, just been upgraded state highway with a 55 mph limit and he's running around 80. I come up to around 10 car lengths behind him and he starts pulling away again, so what else can I do, I keep the same distance behind him until we are running around 90. About a mile goes by and he decides he's not going to shake me and lets up to about 75-80 again. Well we come off a big turn onto a straight away that's easily a half mile long and I take the opportunity to show him what the gatlin tips look like. He didn't like that and snuggled right up behind me. The moment got the best of me and I ran it up to when it quits! Surprised the crap out of me when it shut down momentarily, I looked down to see the speedo just a little north of 120, MAN! The wing was right behind me all the way. A long sweeper was coming up and we went through it at around 110 (speedo observed).
I would never have thought I'd hit the limiter but it happened and it felt GOOD. Looking back, I realize it was dumb and I sure it'll be a long time in doing it again.

I think I can relate. I have seen a Video of a guy riding a Vision on a highway while sitting on the rear seat.I always thought to myself I would never do that.

I was on Long Beach Island in NJ I have been there many times growing up their is a long center highway that runs the length of the Island. When I was younger the speed limit has varied from town to town. The long strech out to Barnagat Light used to be 50 then 40 now it is 35 MPH. I found myself setting the cruise control because the Shore Cops live to write fines.

Well it was about my third run along the "Highway" cruise control on and I started letting the auto pilot control my Vision. I never moved to the back seat but I was riding with no hands . The bike seemed not to miss my input...

I am sure it won't be a long time before you do it again. Once you get the fever, it does not go away.
Besides, there is always someone thinking this big machine can't compete with him, so he will run and you will chase and beat him.
I beat up on my HD buddies all the time, but they still keep trying and I keep running off on them.

I'm still LMAO when you rev'd your bike in front of my pals, poor Jimmy got so excited he hit the starter on his Fatboy while still in gear. The bike jumped ahead and we all had a good laugh at Jimmy's expense.
So I am not surprised that you are beating up on your HD buddies

Candu,
Do you participate in the John Flagg Memorial Ride.
Been talking with a buddy in Ottawa about doing a little trip around your neck of the woods.
The ride, with visits to Wayne's World, Peak and Thom Boys.

Never done the ride, this year it started the same day I was leaving for the East coast. I googled it, but didn't see 2010 dates. Could do if it doesn't conflict with my yearly ride with the guys.

Don't have a dealer with a customer lounge, but there is the Hawg's Breath bar right next door to me.

I think it is the third weekend in June. I am sure we will talk before then.

Speaking of rev limiters, getting pretty good at tickling it but not quite hitting it.
Takes a lot of [ractice.

Speaking of the rev limiter, does anyone that have the new cams installed hit the limiter? If so, how fast? ET PS: I pissed off a beamer on I-95 doing the same thing, passed a wing doing around 100. Run into the wing rider later, said Rosie looked nice, he already knew how it ran, he didn't need to ask about that.

With the cam upgrade , she breathes a lot easier and hits the rev limiter much faster.

Actually, mine has the Lloyds cams, vfc and intake. I don't know the exact top speed I hit because I didn't look down until after it cut out for a second and then it showed just over 120. The bike gets there so much quicker with the upgrades, but I think the mph limit is the same. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong.

MPH limit will be higher. Rev limiter is based on RPM not MPH.
Kevinx has explained this much better in the past but, more HP=less RPM.
My top speed from GPS was 122, most speedometers are off by a few MPH.
I was still climbing when I backed off, just wanted to embarass an HD buddy.

Yeah, I never really hit the limiters until I started playing on the highway after the fuel controller and then the cams. I can't really come up with an ET because it's been a couple weeks but it does so much sooner. Especially in 2nd 3rd and 4th gear. Mine seems to hit it at about 118 in 5th so I think my speedo is a little off calibration but nothing too far off from what's been reported. Mines reading right around there. I don't exactly watch the speedo when I'm running fast because of the conditions of the highway where I live. I had a similar experience as you did with the Gold Wing. I turned onto the highway then whipped around a guy I knew on a Road King at just over 100 in 5th gear. As I did it I went ahead a grabbed 6th just to give him a heads up that I still had more legs. This was right after the cam install when I was playing around to see how much better she ran with the baffles reinstalled in St.1 Lvl.2 (BTW, much better WITH restriction than without). I hope the weather is at least bearable next month when I get back home. I'll post how fast she hits the limiter with cams and on spray. :-O Can't wait!

Huh??? RPM to speed ratio isn't going to change just because you changed cams, gearing is still the same.

I think what he's trying to say is that the higher the HP, the less RPM you need to develop it. i.e. If you have upgraded your cams and fine tuned your A/F curve, you won't have to rev it to 5,000 Rpm to develop all your power. What I've been paying more attention to is the A/F and the torque curve.

That's right. The speed limiter is still going to be in the same place as before, but with more HP available, you will reach it quicker. Added power would give you the the ability to go faster (more MPH) if you override the factory speed limiter, or change the gearing.

On level roads, the top speed contest between a Vision and a GL1800 Goldwing will usually be a tie. The Goldwing has more HP in stock form, but is geared so that the peak occurs at 124/125 MPH. The Vision (stock) has less HP than the 'Wing, but is a tiny bit more aerodynamic, and can reach the (limited) speed of 122 MPH. Many 'Wing riders add huge Tulsa or ShowChrome windshields to their machines, and cannot achieve any higher speed than you can on your stock Vision. Just find a 'Wing rider willing to play, lower your windshield, and have fun.

Warning: if you have a very long straight downhill run (like a mile or so) in front of you, the 'Wing may be able to outrun you, since he doesn't have a speed limiter.

On level roads, you'll be dancing side-by-side.

The speed limiter can be overridden on the Vision fairly easily. I think KevinX and/or Lloydz may be coming out with a plug-n-play solution to override the speed limiter. If the speed limiter is overridden, then the stock rev-limiter would limit the Vision's top speed to about 138/140 MPH. With Lloydz upgrades, and the speed limiter overridden, all a Goldwing is going to see is your V-shaped taillights getting smaller and smaller in his view.

Then the kid on his GSXR or 'Busa or ZX14 will pass you both like you're sitting still.

+1 the longest stretch was about 27 miles head down the Natchez Trace Parkway... Speed limit is 50 and there is not a stop sign or light for 420 miles... There are a lot of deer at dusk!

Yes - the back seat is extremely comfortable. It is also windier then I was expecting it to be and the music is still better in the front seat.

Crazy - Yes
Stupid - Yes
Fun - Yes
