New Bohemia, VA | The last time I replaced it I dremeled out. This time I had planned on using a blind hole puller, but I can't find one that is 2 1/2 inches like the race is. So now I'm stuck. I used heat on it but didn't want to go to far with that, nothing so far. Any advise, tool, or something is appreciated. Don't say take it to the dealer, it ain't happening, I'll dremel it again. Thank you. |

Beer Collins, Colorado (there is no fort) | I just peeked in the manual and it says to drive the lower bearing race out evenly using a long flat punch through the access slot. |

Brighton, TN | If you have a welder. Weld a large washer to the race. Then run some all thread through and put a nut or two on the other side. If you get a long enough piece you can stick it out the top of the neck and tighten the nut up to the washer. Then hammer from the top or if you have an impact driver just drive it out. Or if not replacing top bearing. Use the all thread as a slide hammer. I put nuts and a large washer at the very end and grabbed a hold of the all thread and started banging away. It will take some effort that way but it will come out. If you could rig up a weight to run up the all thread and slam into the end with other washer and nut it would probably be a lot easier.

New Bohemia, VA | I don't have a welder, Brian, wish I did. I'll probably do two notches in the cast, it shouldn't mess with the integrity of the seat, and drive it out. Right now I'm down, and not much of a window to work in.
thanks for sharing, Chris, I'm going to try that, but I don't think the seat is the same for the vision as it is in the video. |

| access hole is the steering stem hole.
ask for a break drum race puller. same thing but they will understand you now.
Or go to aftermarket bike shop and ask if you can rent theries |

New Bohemia, VA | Book says notch. Can you post a picture of the bearing puller you are speaking of? This is my second go round and it's got me down to do the welding or dremel. This time I'll drill the holes to drive it out next time. This is a pure blind recess, no place to grip or drive, zilch. |

Beer Collins, Colorado (there is no fort) | I had mine apart a month ago and just cleaned/re-packed-everything looked good and feels solid (48,000 miles). I have new bearings but chose not to replace this time around. One thing I was looking at is drilling & tapping a grease zerk so you could lube the lower bearings with a mini grease gun rather than tearing everything apart. Part of this mod would involve carving a passageway from the zerk to the inner bearing. If you do use a Dremel cutting out the race one could position the cutting wheel so that any over cut could be used as a passageway for the grease to get to the inner rollers. Just something to consider while your working on it-I added grease zerks on my old Vulcan at the steering head & swing arm bushings-they can go a long time if you can keep 'em lubed up. |

New Bohemia, VA | For those who are following, I'm still hacking the race out. Sometimes I think I should give up wrenching for my own good. I had tapped the new bearing on the shaft and had it down to a 1/16 of an inch from seating, so I thought. I finally took it to the craft shop and pressed, and it still had the gap. In the process I messed up the cage on the new bearing and rendered it unserviceable. I brought it home and remove the hosed bearing. Guess what? That 1/16th of inch gap is the exposed edge of the seat.....I had it on here at the house and didn't even realize it. Well, off to ebay to get another bearing. |

New Bohemia, VA | I bought my blind puller at Harbor Fright about a year ago. The largest is 1 3/8 or something like that. We need about 2 1/2 and I just don't where they exist. I tried to see if Polaris has something, but they are elusive in this area. The book says there are "notches" to drive it out, yeah, right, nooooo notches, nada, none. I figure I could drill a hole above, but that would just compound the moisture problem, so no. I thought about drilling a hole to the bearing for a zerk, but I don't see how to place that to lube the bearing. So, when I get the new one, I'll shove it together and get back on the road. I'm having major withdrawals... |
