Trying to decide whether to replace it before the trip, or not. At 9,000 miles right now. Headed out for the big annual trip in 3 weeks. I replaced the back tire this spring after I picked up a piece of metal. How many miles can you expect out of the front tire? Visual inspection is fine right now.

I usually get 17,000 to 20,000 on my front E3's. If I get tired of the whine from the cupping I might replace it a little sooner. At 9,000 you probably have a lot of miles in it yet.

Keep your air pressure up. Check cold and fill accordingly. I keep mine at 41psi front and rear to make it simple. If you check it while they are hot, you'll find them to be much higher, 45 to 48psi or so. Resist the temptation to lower the pressure when they are hot. I get as long of life out of my E3s as I can expect, front, around 22,000 miles, rear, around 12-14,000 miles. If I dare, I'll take it to 15,000... The so-called cupping is not bad, never seen it to be, mine has the wavy tread but it's never messed with the tire life.

Spend $5 and get a tire tread gage. When the tread is down to 1MM time to replace

Look for the little arrow or V on the sidewall that tells you where you can find the wear bars.
When your tires are worn to the point where they start wearing on the wear bars, that's when it's recommended to buy a new tire.
There are wear bars in the center of the tire and some more that favor the outsides of the tire.
Check both areas.

I don't let tires get down to the wear bars. About double that depth makes me feel better.

+1 on the tire pressure,I run 40f/42r,16k on the rear 20k+ on the front, pretty much identical to the D407,408s on my last Harley. After 21k mi with a Tiregard tpms I've seen rear as high as 55lbs,front as high as 48 lbs. depending on ambient temp. swings, type of roads etc.1lb psi per 10deg raise in ambient temps.I've seen 3 or 4 psi increase just rolling out of the garage onto black top.

Yeah I know, but there's so little tread PATTERN on these tires to start with. Thought I'd see what everybody else was doing.

You won't lose any air checking them if you use a zero loss pressure gauge (like the one you use to pump up your rear shock). Every time I check them (before almost every trip), they're exactly where I left them the last time I checked. About 40f/41r.

How long is your trip? Tire life is unpredictable. I would get the opinion of whoever does your tires, they see them every day. My first front tire was replaced at 15,100. My second is down to the wear bars at 17,000.
