Was blabbering on at work about the Indian 111 to one of my old H-D buddies.  He Googled an article and looked at the pictures.  "Thunderstroke.  Cool name!"  I was going on about how shocked I was at how old-school the motor looked.  Parallel pushrods, 3-cams, down-firing exhaust, blah-blah-blah...

 Photobucket

He looked at it and said "Yeah, looks like they stole that look from the S&S X-Wedge."  (A motor that a LOT of Harley guys really like.)

Photobucket

I said, "Well, if I had to guess, S&S got their inspiration from the 1940 Chief motor." and I pulled up some photos...

Photobucket

Dead silence.................

(I LOVE these guys!)

An Indian tech told me the engine makes 115 lbs of torque measured at the transmission pulley @ 2500 rpm. So I asked how much at 5000 rpm?? Said he couldn't say under pain of death, Haha. Guess he knew I knew the 5252 conversion. Hahahaha............I'm guessing EPA 85-90 RWHP..

Considering what Lloyd was able to do to improve the Victory 106's EPA tune---maybe a 120 HP stock block Indian 111 is in the future? (110 Ft/LBS @ 5750 RPM)

I hope Polaris learned from these years of building Victory engines that a nice ( easy ) slip on big bore kit would be a good sales item for the dealerships and the company..........

They offered a factory 100 inch kit for the early 92 inch motors...........

I don't care how jaded you are about the convoluted history Indian, that Thunderstroke 111 makes an incredible statement about how serious Polaris is to do this thing right.  I have no doubt that the design team will do the brand proud with the rest of the bike.

Things happen for a reason and now that my '08 Vision is history, I can see myself jumping on a first year Polaris Indian.  Owning a Vision in 2007 was unreal.  No one had ever seen one before.  Owning one of the first Indians with that motor in it would be cool.  I just happen to be forced into retirement next summer so it looks like the planets could be lining up for another cool chapter in my life story.  Just sayin.....

I was one of the jaded Indian non believers, but seeing the new engine in person changed my mind. I believe Polaris will make this work...There will be 3 major American made motorcycle manufacturers to choose from starting this summer.........Haven't had that since when ?? The 1930's ??

Cushman lasted until 1965. The short lived (and amazing) Crockers lasted until 1941. Other than them, all the majors were done by the 30's except Harley, which was saved by government contracts. The others all succumbed to the bad economy and war time material shortages. Not counting the later boutique makers like Boss Hoss, Big Dog, Ridley, etc and the failed attempts of revival like Excelsior-Henderson and Indian.

Indian is back to stay this time, I think.

I'm curious about the bike, I love the new engine and if the bikes half as nice then I might have to get one.

If you guys are considering a new Polaris Indian be prepared to shell out a significant amount of coin. Polaris has previously announced that they are keeping the pricing of the former Moorhead, NC Indian operation and a simple Indian Chief Classic started at $26,499 and went all the way up to $37,899 for the Indian Chief Vintage LE.

I guess Polaris has found the motorcycle brand equivalent to the H-D CVO line in order to complement their Victory line.

Now, if things change and they price things more reasonably, say around $15K to $16K to start I would say that they will end up selling A LOT of Indians for the first 4 to 5 years until people get over the novelty of it.

That was for the hand built carryover models that Polaris assembled, in the temporary building across the street from the factory, out of the parts boxes they got in the buyout. They have since said that the new Polaris designed production line models coming from the main plant will be competitively priced with Harley and Victory.

I can dream, can't I?

I may not be able to afford the 2014 Indians, but I am eager to see them. The indian dealer network is so small I am wondering if Victory dealers will honor warranty service until these bikes take off?

I'm just home from Daytona, the Indian engine looked and sounded very good. But not as good as my ole 08 Vision. I ran it on the Wyotec dyno in the Brute HorsePower Shootout, spun it up to 6000 rpm. I was in third place in the 105-128 cu inch domestic class when I last checked Friday evening.............. Oh yeah 114.64HP with 29,000 miles.................

Hey !!! my run held third place, got a trophy in the mail today from Wyotec and a $100.00 gift certificate good towards any dyno jet product.......That's funny and cool at the same time.
