Mt. Vernon, WASH. | I would hope everyone is aware of the new Boeing 787 being grounded by the FAA because of explosion/fire issues with the aircrafts Lithium/Ion batteries. If you are operating your bike or ATV and using an L/I battery I'd advise caution.
If the latest and greatest aerospace electronic charging and monitoring avionics in the 787 are having issues with the batteries, then what about the essentially 1970's era charging systems in your bike? A few years ago there was a rash of cell phones and laptops catching fire, L/I batteries CANNOT be extinguished if they overheat and catch fire.

! am running a Ballistic EVO 16 cell lithium in parallel with a AGM on my Rocket 3, gives me about 860 cca (more than enough to turn over that 2300cc monster). I'll take the risk. That's what insurance is for.

One question I would ask you is, how quickly can you go from warp 2 to a dead stop with white hot flames blowing up through the bar hole between the fuel tanks and belching out around the front cylinder onto your legs where the oil cooler is located ahead of the battery box (and L/I explode violently) so now. potentially you've lit off the engine oil by breeching the cooler so it's blowing back on your legs too.
If you're up to it, by all means toast a nut-I'll go make more popcorn and watch. |

Well Synster... I do appreciate the warning; I never meant to minimize your message.
The the act of operating a motorcycle on the roadway crowded with other traffic is dangerous. Everything is inherently dangerous and full of risk; regarding motorcycling.
Not concerned about the possibility of my Ballistic lithium battery malfunctioning at this point... but I have always been aware of the possibility that it "could" cause an issue since it's relatively new technology adapted to stand in for legacy AGM/wet cell type batteries.

Westchester Co., NY | Slightly off topic but I had considering getting a L/I battery when a replacement is due until I read that they were not recommended (it might have been in Motorcycle Consumer News) for bikes the draw more then an average bike. I figured that between a HID headlight, stereo, GPS and heated gear the Vision would qualify.

Central Maryland | The Shorai (sp?) lithium's suck for long term draw. The Ballistic lithium's do a little better at that though. (t has been proven on the R3 forum that I am a member of)
I wouldn't run a Lithium battery by itself on a bike; only in parallel (if you have room for it) with a AGM or sealed wet cell battery; to give out additional cranking power.

Mt. Vernon, WASH. | Not a problem, it's obvious that not a lot of folks understand all the implications involved in this still very new technology.
For a very graphic demonstration go to www.pcpitstop.com/pcsafety (on YOU TUBE too) and see what a battery burning uncontrollably @ 1000f looks like and scale the 'fun' up from a laptop battery to a bike battery

| Until the federal govt decides to fund research for L/I batteries you won't see any big advantage for them. We have been waiting for that funding. Think about it, wouldn't a submarine benefit from this technology as long as everyone doesn't die from it? Maybe the 787 will get this funding going? The Feds wouldn't want to see a bunch of Aero workers laid off right now. |
