Ok, another silly question.
I have the heated grips on my 08 vv. The finish seems to be wearing off, and they are getting a bit tacky. Is there a coating or treatment i can use? is anyone else experiencing the same?

Some sort of chemical is attacking the rubber compound. Could be oil, brake fluid, sunblock, windex, sweat, or whatever. I see this often on mountain bike grips. I always wear full finger gloves on both the mtbike and motorcycle and do not have the tacky grip issue. I am also careful to not touch the grips while working on or cleaning the bike.

I've had the same thing happen on my '08. Polaristar will not cover it under the extended warranty as they consider it normal wear and tear.

What I did to fix the problem and cover up the now ugly looking rubber was to buy a cheap set of lace on leather grip cover with fringe, cut the fringe off and lace the remaining portion over my stock grips. The leather is very thin, between 1/16" and 1/32" and doesn't add any noticeable diameter to the stock grips. I got mine from Drag Specialties as the Drag Specialties brand and I paid $10 plus sales tax at a local leather store.

Oh, I put the laces on the bottom of the grip on both sides with the throttle side compensated for average movement and they give my thumb and tips of my fingers a nice feel when I'm holding them.

The easy way to lace them up AND get them on the grips is to loosely lace them onto an empty toilet paper roll or paper towel roll and then slide them onto the grips.

I just read where a guy put shrink tube over grips. He said they felt nice and you have to watch how mush heat you use cause you can split the shrink tube.
Check out some electric supply store.

How well do they hold up to the weather?

Any pics?

Wasn't this subject just brought up in another thread last week? Anyway, here's the best answer for the money....

http://www.casporttouring.com/cst/motorcycles/GRIPPUP.html

Personally, I began to see the same signs of wear in my grips as well, but I went with replacement grips instead.... Avons.... work well, holding up okay too, and I have a variable heating system with them.

I found my grips wearing quick and I finally put on the leather grip covers. There was a two-fold reason, one to stop the wear, and to thicken the grip. My hand would cramp bad because of how small the stock grips were. I've had the leather grips on now for a few years and find they wear well with no issues. My bike is out in the weather all of the time. I even left the tassles on.

Pretty much negates the effects of the heating elements though, doesn't it?

I don't use them anyways unless it is below 32 and I go more than 50 miles. Works nearly as good as without the leather.

You guys are losing it.

The more you put over the stock heated grip the less heat your going to get.

yep - but I'll take 100% year round riding comfort over 10% of a little cold, and out of that I use them about 1%.   Too many other things out there like plug in gloves, etc, (which I don't have any heated gear except when I eat beans) not to worry about it too much.

Here's the left grip, about 3 years old, and the wear.  The right is not so bad because of the way I have it for the throttle.

Really like the Grip Puppies. Provide increase vibration absorption and much more comfortable diameter. Heat comes through good enough. Earlier post suggested calling the dealer for size option recommendations. Not sure what size I ordered, but they were a bear to get on.

I also use the grip puppies....works great and Ive noticed no loss in effect of the heating - might take a few extra minutes to warm up.....but gets just as hot.

I never use the lower heat setting anyway and I'm sure high will be hot enough to come through the covers. I'm not overly concerned.

I have the grip puppies and tehy work great . I turned on the heated grips riding beartooth pass with fingerless gloves. I was satisfied with the amount of heat I felt.

That would be me and the link on what I did is in the cheap solutions thread:

http://www.vision-riders.com/bb/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=9157

I did turn on the heat, and it seemed to work just fine.

When they wear out (and they will) I will likely use 1 1/2" wrap instead of 2".

total cost was less than $10.

Where did you get the tubing and how thick is it?

Would it have been possible to connect the avons to your factory switch? Did they change the turn of your throttle any?

Yes and no. They come with their own 4 way electronic switch, with a single button that allows you to toggle through 4 preset heat settings as well as off. Personally, I didn't like their switch.

Also, the factory heated grips use two separate sets of heating elements for low and high, which is how the simple dash mounted toggle works. It doesn't do anything more than send the current down one or the other set of elements in the grips. There is no current reduction being done at the switch itself.

However, I DID make use of the OEM switch nonetheless. The Avons use a single heating element/circuit that expects the current supplied to be varied to produce different levels of heat. That is what their controller does. So, I hooked up one circuit directly to the high side of the toggle switch. That provides 100% current or heat. The low side, of the switch can then be routed through either a resistor or pulse width modulator. I chose to use a PWM as it doesn't generate heat, and it's fully variable. So, in effect, I have a dial that allows me to vary the heat setting to my liking, along with the full blast high position on the dash.

16k and my grips still look showroom, like they have never been touched by human hands. Oh wait!
They haven't been, I would never ride without gloves. I like my skin where it is, not on the road.

still a baby.  you'll notice wear around 30,000 if not sooner.  Always wear gloves.

Found it on Ebay, and it is about 1/16" +.
