Brighton, TN | Was in Sears the other day, helmet under my arm, couple of jackets and a rain gear wind breaker on top of all that. Guy walks up to me and says, "You ride a motorcycle in Memphis!"
I almost handed him a "I'm an idiot!" sign. For a split second I almost told him, "Nope, I just dress like this when it gets cold and I carry a helmet because I wanna be like all the other Harley riders I know this time of year! That and the helmet keeps my head warm!"
You fellas would be so proud I refrained from the above, cause it looked like the old chap was in a bit of a quandry following his wife around inside Sears and appeared he needed some Male Bonding! So, I just asked why he asked the question and he proceeded to tell me that Memphis was highly dangerous for riding around and insurance was through the roof because of the area. I politely asked him if he drove in Memphis and he said yes, than I stated, "I rest my case! Either is dangerous if you ain't paying attention!" Then he went on to tell me how he had seen a guy get sideswiped in front of him and get up with no damage or scratches.
The moral of the story is I think I'm gonna start wearing my helmet around or at least carrying it with me, just to hear the banter.;
On the way out a couple of young fellas 16-18, noticed a helmet under my arm. One of them stated, "Hey look, its a real man with a helmet." I had to look around to see if there was someone following me! As he passed he even patted me on the shoulder, I checked he didn't pick pocket me, so unsure what that meant! I just replied, "Freeze on!" It was in the high 30's! |

New Bohemia, VA | Rain gear??? I've learned leather is the all purpose gear. I wear my helmet but rarely carry it around with me when I'm off the bike, I don't to be taken as a biker....
Freeze on!!!! (I'll have to use that one when I get asked twenty times in a day "you road today???!!!!, it's freezing out there!!!!" |

I have textile jacket and pants , water proof but breaths , so if I got my riding gear on, I have my rain gear on. when it's raining people would say "you're going to get wet today" and smile and I used to say "no but my riding gear will". I finally got worn down with that reply and just say "yep" and smile back lol! Same thing with cold , they say "It's too cold to ride that thing" I used to go into this detailed explanation of how my riding gear functioned so well and as I stated above , I just got weary of telling the same people the same static reply so now I just say "yep"  |

Bay of Gigs, WA | I truly dislike it when someone has a doom story. I was pulling into Grangeville, Idaho one summer evening, on my way back from Jackpot, Nevada. It was about 108 on the thermometer in front of the local Cattlemens Club. I parked in front, parched to the soles of my feet, and two old farmers, sitting there on the liars bench in their bibs started talking about my then new Norton. "Yep." one said, "My nephews kid had one'a them once. Loved it. Rode it all over, 'till one day he hit a combine and baled himself." "Old man," I said, "don't you even put those pictures in my head. I'm still makin' it to Lewiston tonight, then Seattle tomorrow. When I'm 350 miles from the house, you can talk about the weather, sunshine, pretty girls, I don't care what, but destruction ain't happening in this here head." And I walked in and had my cold one or two. But I sure as hell don't have the time of day to hear about how dangerous it is out there. You'll bust your head if you slip in the shower...

Good story. Gotta love the oldsters reclining back in the rocking chairs, marveling at youth. They were marveling at youth... they just didn't want to admit their inability to experience it.
Normally, those folks whom wag the finger at you, and feel compelled to warn you... are actually trying to beat down a beast inside of them... that's longing for the ride.

That, I believe, is the truth well spoken. I've had numerous back seat riders based on this.
It's not limited to old timers. Many a lady, old and young, have expressed those sentiments to me, only to find themselves later perched on the back of my bike, grinning from ear to ear. Call me what you will, but I do limit it to those of the female persuasion!
