Polaris Industries Inc. has announced a minority investment in Brammo, an Ashland, Ore.-based maker of electric motorcycles. By investing in Brammo, Polaris obtains access to its proprietary electric vehicle powertrain technology, as well as exposure to the electric motorcycle market.

“We are excited to advance our electric vehicle capability by establishing Polaris as a business partner and part owner of Brammo, one of the most innovative and aggressive companies we have found in the electric motorcycle space,” says Scott Wine, Polaris CEO. “Our companies share a passion for performance, and we look forward to exploiting the numerous opportunities created by pairing Brammo’s industry-leading electric powertrain technology with Polaris’ vast array of market-leading powersports products. This is a small, but important, investment for Polaris in an electric vehicle market that we feel is poised for significant growth.”

Polaris is hardly new to electric vehicles. The Minnesota-based manufacturer currently produces the Ranger EV off-road vehicle and the Gem and Breeze neighborhood vehicles.

Founded in 2002, Brammo currently offers the Enertia line of motorcycles, capable of speeds in excess of 60 mph and claimed ranges up to 80 miles on a single charge. Brammo plans to expand its product line to include high-performance sport motorcycles capable of more than 100 miles on a single charge, as well as a full line of entry- to high-performance dirt and dual-sport motorcycles.

“We have always been impressed with Polaris’ leadership within the powersports industry. Polaris is a company founded on innovation and quality and, as such, their decision to partner with Brammo is a resounding endorsement of our technology,” says Brammo CEO and founder Craig Bramscher. “This is a terrific scenario for Brammo’s customers, as we bring Polaris’ legendary engineering, manufacturing, and customer service expertise to bear on our products.”

In addition to potentially utilizing Brammo technology in its own products, Polaris will collaborate with Brammo to grow its core business.

Eletric ??? Some sort of new power source? Maybe 'Atomic Fusion' ? Or new form of Steam Power?

The fact of the matter is that within the next 30 to 50 years almost all vehicles on the road with be those powered by a renewable energy source. The only thing holding things up right now is the efficiency of electric storage and generation systems and the size required for most vehicles. I was at my dealership this past Saturday picking up my Vision after having the radio replaced (on a '08 at no cost under the extended warranty!!!) and a gentleman was in getting his Vetrix electric scooter serviced, he rides it daily on his 12 mile ride to work and it has just enough range at moderate suburban speeds to do the round trip from home to work and back. He said it only cost him about $.25 to charge it every night, yes, only 25 CENTS! with a range that would use a little more than a half gallon of gas on my Vision, at $3.50/gallon that means my round trip cost to ride to work (11 miles one way) is more than 7 TIMES what his is. The logic is cost benefits will be the determining factor on the expansion of electric vehicles.

And an 'eletric' that would perform like a Vision would cost how much ????? Oh, about 50 times more than gas - if it were possible at all. Unless 'fusion/electric' becomes a reality - there ain't NO way .... and sure as shit not in (most of) our lifetimes. Hoo-Rah for OIL SANDS and CANADA !

Yeh the cost difference sound's good now.But as soon as they have it figured out completley, the cost of electric will skyrocket. That's the American way. That's the American way,You want it.Your going to pay for it.

Don,

30 to 50 years is a very long time to come up with an efficient system. The advantages in performance of an electric motor versus an internal combustion engine are tremendous, think instant, on demand, extremely high torque. The problem with electric vehicles has never really been the motor, it has been the storage or generation system. For our type of use, in the fashion we use our Visions for the most part, it would have to be a generation system, and along those lines think fuel cell. There has been some success with a new micro fuel cell that pulls the electricity right out of the air, something to do with ion and electrons and such, science that is above my pay grade, but it they are now experimenting with such things, just imagine what 30 to 50 years in the future holds! The scientific community is developing all sort of technology that was only fantasy even 10 years ago! A U.K. scientific team has developed small pieces of material that can actually bend light around an object thus rendering it nearly invisible, a "cloak" if you will and have even patented the process. Scientists at MIT are working on a system that could move solid matter from one place to another such as a Star Trek transporter, right now they are only moving atoms but who knows what the future holds? My point here is that the future is a bright thing, with many wondrous things that all of us will be living to see happen (hopefully)!

Another example of fantasy becoming reality...........on Star Trek TNG the crew used "pads" to write reports and letters and read books and such, now look at today's Apple iPad, Samsung Galaxy Tab, and even the much simpler Kindle and you will realize that fantasy has become reality!

As long as you're talking 'chemical' - as in "fuel cell" - there AIN'T NO WAY! The Laws of Physics won't allow it. Simple. Batteries today aren't a hell of a lot different than those 120 years ago. Or if they are - they cost 10,000 times more. Only a breakthru at the ATOMIC FISION level will allow a bike the size of a VV to travel 1000 miles in a day on 'Eletric' power. Dream on....
