I like the original style but I would not want the rack. I think $450 is high and if priced more like $300 I would buy it right now!

OK, we have some serious progress. Thanks for all the patience fellas, and now that you're finally seeing what I'm up to, I hope you forgive me for taking so long to finalize the design.

Not to simply plaguerize Vic's original design and knock it off which is very easily done I've started with a clean sheet of paper here. Why not just duplicate Viucs? A) because I respect patents and copyrights, and B) I always look to improve a part, be it cosmetically, or in function, where in this case I think we accomplished both but I want you to be the final judges.

I've been playing around with this a million different ways and feel pretty darn good about where it's at now but I'd like feedback from you all before finalizing since it is going to be you putting on your bikes. The backrest plate will be further shaped/contoured, as too will be the arms where they meet the plate, so look at the concept more than the rest shape and size and then tell me what you think. Please don't ask price yet because until one's finished and all the costs are in I won't have one.

Notable Features will include:

*All billet aluminum TIG welded construction for light weight and great strength. They will be available in our signature triple show chrome or in gloss black powdercoat as standard, as well as any other finish I offer on a custom basis, including matte and satin black powder coat.

*The backrest will removable in seconds, with only the receiver nubs protruding above the cowling when removed.

*Rest legs will accomodate the same rack fitment as OEM, which are also the same as our Vision Backrest Racks

*There will be an option for a drop-in to just accomodate a rack all by itself, w/o the backrest in place. Something many have voices a want for.

*Filler plugs/caps will also likely be available to clean it up when you want nothing on.

The red in the below 2 photos represents the cowling in place to show what will be protruding of the receivers.

This is all you'll need to bolt up.

I know less than nothing about the engineering of these types of things, but in terms of functionality it looks and sounds like a winner to me. I'm interested so please keep us posted on your progress.

Wonderful news! Just curious if the mounting areas could be hidden under the removable panel? Might not have enough room?
I would like mine in black.
Can't wait.

I like your design BUT I think under 500 pounds of force it will break.
The two sockets don't look strong enough. Keep in mind if you have a person pushing backwards the sockets will brake. You need to add a braces going back or forward.
As I remember all HD braces are tested to handle a 500 pound force.
I'm just trying to help you not trying to shoot you down.

I'd widen the bottom mounting plate just below the vertical slots to add additional strength through the added welded area. Looks great!

Braces are totally unecessary. Ever see the discontinued OEM rest? No braces, just 4 bolts. My base will be even heavier stock than theirs, so no worries.
I do appreciate your concerns and input John, but do know ALL designs I put out are thoroughly vetted and built for the task at hand, and this one will be no different. These renderings are to show you the basic design and the features and benefits that my system will offer. I don't know what your metallurgy or engineering knowledge is, or your fabrication background, but do trust me, I know mine. In my almost 5 years doing this and being posted on all the forums, you can search to your heart's content but you will find one post about any of my structural/support related parts failing. This is because I make sure when designing something that it is more than suitable for the task at hand. If I can't, it goes in the scrap pile. This is why it has been months to get to this, with lots of different concepts and designs played with before settling on this one.

As for 500 lbs of force, there aren't too many situations that could exert such stresses, and beyond that my only suggestions are if you ride a passenger that is heavy enough to put 500 lbs of force against it, 1) Definitely don't piss them off!, and 2) Suggest Weight Watchers!

Im confused. I see the general design, but will this come up through the plastic cover plate like the old one? If I read correctly, the Vic luggage rack will work with this? Have one sitting in my garage. How much do we think it will cost?

Im ready to order if it will work with my luggage rack. Thanks for working on this!!!!!!!

You're very wlecome, I'm just sorry I couldn't decide on the final rendition sooner for you guys and gals.

I think you missed this text in between the photos regarding the cowl... The red in the below 2 photos represents the cowling in place to show what will be protruding of the receivers. So yes, the receivers will go through the cowling. Unfortunately Ma Vic didn't leave any other options available to do it any differently. However, ours are going to be show quality finished where they come through, so even when all is removed they'll not be an eye sore.

As for the rack, you read right. Since I already offer 4 different rack designs for the OEM backrest I didn't want to have to add yet another fitment so I made them to accomodate the the original OEM rack pattern like our current offerings are as well.

Here are some updated renderings...

I'm back I talk to a guy that made them for a company and ask him how they tested there sissy bar. He said they bolted it to a stand and then started hanging weights on the very end of the bar. Or the farthest end away from the mounting bolt. They add 100 pounds interments till they got to 500 pounds and decided that was more then enough.

I do think you have a very smart and good looking backrest

I know you like my input but I don't want you getting your ass sued off. If you plan on have a company sell this for you they will ask you for a minim of one million dollar insurance police.

I appreciate that John, and the input. I worry less about MY liability and more about the safety of the passengers who'll be using them, not that the two aren't directly related however. I've been making my Drag-N-Rest backrests now for 4+ years without one failing, and those are even lighter than these with only 1/2" round 6063 aluminum supports.

I promise you, these will not break when I put it all together. Cross my heart.

Looks like another paycheck is going to you. What will you use to fill the gap between the arms and the cowling? My cowling is already cut for the OEM backrest, will it still work with yours?

Pretty sweet looking backrest. I hope you're also going to make them in black for us 8-Ball riders. This and a luggage rack will be just the thing to make an 8-Ball a fully functional two person machine.

Darrell... you're continued support will be greatly appreciated. The uprights are going to be in the same basic position for obvious reasons, so you'll have to widen the slot some where the receivers will come through, but that should be easy enough. You'll still have the slot left over, but I'm sure a strip of rubber center molding would clean that up simply.

John... I'm likin' that enthusiasm, keep it up. As for getting the first one, I think you're gonna have one tough fight on your hands there!

And last but not least, Mark... Thanks. The trick here has been to combine form and function, not just one or the other so I'm very glad you think it does looks good. As for black, absotively posolutely, no bout a doubt it. Gloss black will be a standard offering and of course will match our racks, as well as there will be an optional set of 'rack only' uprights, and those too will be a standard offering in gloss black. I will also do them in satin black, matte black, or any of the colored powder coats we offer including metalflakes and candies.

Will, I have been quietly waiting and reading about this project on all of the forums. Thanks for the time and energy you have put into this thing. The design looks absolutely awesome. Riding is slow up here in the midwest. Although this is the best winter I have seen in a long time. Let us know when you have these ready. And it looks like you will need a big inventory to get this rolling.

Looks really nice....almost tempted to remove my trunk!

A couple of suggestions, if you don't mind.

First, I can't tell if the slot in the socket goes all the way through. If not, a little drainage hole might be a good idea.

Second, for when the rest is removed. A choice of either a simple rubber cap that plugs the slot, or better yet, an optional milled aluminum plug with matched coating (chrome, powder coat, etc.)

You could also develop a very nice flag holder that would plug in there too.

Nice piece of work!

Will, here's my 2 cents. Please make the actual backrest pad look like the oval OEM drivers backrest pad or something different than the original backrest pad that you are replacing. The original passenger backrest pad is, IMHO butt ugly. Just sayin'!!

Like everyone else.. I've been patiently waiting for someone to come out with a decent backrest and luggage rack for my Vision. I've been biting at the bit to take off the trunk ever since I've owned it but didn't want to do it until I got a good backrest. My insert plate has been sitting in the closet ever since I bought the bike! lol.

I am wishing you luck on your design and hope it is the solution!... If the price is right, I'm pretty sure I would want the passenger backrest and luggage rack combo!
