Reading this thread because I have really poor reception also, but now confused since it looks like the issue may have been fixed?

My 2013 is pretty bad and have been researching antenna mods but now wondering if I just need to pull the dash apart to see if something is loose?

For a 2013, let the dealer pull the dash apart, that thing is still under warranty.

I have a 2013 Vision purchased on MArch 22. The reception was fine until I hooked up my iPod. When I tried to listen to the radion the AM is non existent, the FM stereo goes in and out as if you're in a fringe area and the Weather works perfect. Before I take it to the dealer I was wondering if ther is an easy, do it myself fix.

My question has to do with expectations. I have been completely disappointed with the radio reception on my '13 but I have no frame of reference. Some have implied that generally the reception on a Vision sucks but I have been led to think there were improvements in recent years (2011 and newer).

I am at a disadvantage that I don't know what "normal" should be, but currently normal is bad...

I retract my statement on radio reception. Yesterday on a ride through eastern CT, the reception across all bands was unexceptable. I ridden the same route in different vehicles without issues. I did have my iPod attached. Next time out I will check reception with and without the iPod.

I can definately see the benefit to this mod however, (for me) the antenna placed on the access panel is just too distracting from the clean lines of the vision. Is it possible to mount it on the dash behind the windshield and possibly shorter?

I will be ordering a non-amplified but tuned antenna to test...

I have been a Radioman for over two decades and can say the science behind this is sound, but RF seldom acts like you'd like. Throw in the various metal bits of a bike the signal can be quickly attenuated, but will report back. My intent is to install behind the front fairing and see how it works out.

Update on my 2013 VV radio reception. While installing my new Jurock windshield I discovered that the cable connectors (between the radio and the antenna wire that attaches to the access panel) were very loose. I tightened them up and during a 2 hour ride I experienced a definite improvement in FM reception. I didn't test AM or weather since I don't listen to AM and when I check out the weather I do it while stationary.

Thanks for the update Tom...

It looks like you are only about an hour away; I'd be curious to do a side-by-side comparison. I am taking my bike in for some service work the end of next week but if you have any time, I'd appreciate the chance to meet up with you. Hell, any excuse to meet another rider and go for a ride is all good in my book- I'll buy you a beer just need to suggest a place!

Why not do what this guy did:

http://www.vision-riders.com/bb/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=10306

I have one sitting in the garage ready to install this weekend.

ETA: NM. Guess I should have clicked the link as looks like the OP had tried that and wasn't happy with the improvement. I have to say, I don't get horrible reception, so I will try the Metra and see if it is good enough for me. I live in a pretty populated area, and just switchover to Pandora or Ipod when needed for long trips. Too cheap to go to XM.

That is what I considered initially but looking at the Tune Trapper instead for two reasons...

1. I understand, agree with and think the science behind their antenna is a superior design.
2. No need to find a power source for the antenna.

The power concerns me because of the potential to inject noise, screw up wiring and a powered antenna (read amplified) is not appealing to me because with a wideband amp like in most powered antennas the boost is broad-spectrum, noise and all.

Update on FM reception after tightening the connections.

I took a trip to VT this weekend. I was able to pick up one or two stations. The same results I would have expected if I were in my car. I was in the middle of nowhere. Once I was back in a range I knew I would get reception if I were in my car, the FM reception was on spot with my car receiver.

I took the front panel off of my Vision and followed the instructions in the owners manual. What they fail to tell you is that there is virtually no free play in the antenna lead. The antenna is mounted directly on that panel and readily pulls free of the connector that they tell you to carefully disconnect. The end result for me was no antenna. Just for kicks, I tried out the radio and it still worked but was weak and barely picked up local stations. I took that panel into my home and soldered on a foot of 18 GA wire and reconnected the other end to the connector. When I was done I installed that front panel again and connected the antenna per the manual instructions. My end result was a robust radio reception that was even better than prior to my front panel work. My guess is that I had a marginal connection to the antenna all along and by repairing my own mistake I also made a decent connection to the antenna.

It's been a few months since a post on this thread, but I have to add what I have found since I think it's significant. After about a month of riding my 13 Vision, the radio reception turned to crap. It didn't bother me too much because around town I stream SiriusXM to my phone and plug that into the aux connection. When I decided to take a closer look and figure out what happened, I realized that I had taken my front panel off one time to adjust the headlights. Yes, I reconnected the antenna connector. When I looked further down the cable, I found that the coax connector had come unscrewed, so my antenna was completely disconnected. This connection is far enough down the cable that there is no way to access it without some work. By removing the right speaker and the housing, I gained access to this, reconnected it and now, it's all working perfectly.

Ok guys granted I did used to live in the Ozarks and I have done some red neck Engineering, but Iive about 25 miles out of town and until I got closer to Boise I could not get my favorite station so I remember when I was kid we would go out on the lake and we couldnt get any stations on the boombox (I know I'm dating myself) but we would wrap foil on our antenna and boom good reception. So why wouldnt this work on my 2008 vision? Answer it does.

HMD520 makes an aftermarket kit for the Vision and aftermarket speaker panels to add up to four 6.5 speakers. I have the kit, but haven't put it on. It's all custom so you really need to know what your doing to install it. There are no instructions.
