The plan is to let the dealer do every other service so as to check everything out. I will do the others, just an oil and filter change. The main reason is beause I'm cheap. The question I have is what type of oil to use. Full dino, dino syn blend or full syn? I'm not concerned about brands or which is best. I need to use one that is compatible with the factory oil to not cause problems down the road. Yes I searched and got tired of reading all bickering and didn't find the answer. Thanks in advance.

This is really not a question, and since I don't normally chime in on these things, here's the official word.

There has yet been an official word on any oil doing any damage using it as designed and per Victory's change interval. So, use whichever, flavor of JASO MA oil you prefer and be as cheap or spendy as you like. Taste it if needed, otherwise, change at interval, with whichever color of bottle you prefer.

Anyone's opinion will only validate their experiences and the amount of money they spend. Also, as to what their ears, hands and feet feel, giving them a tangible and cognitive feedback to their senses.

Hopefully, I have explained it to great length and detail, if not fully satisfied please ask another way.

Most dealers won't check it out without you paying for the checkout, if you bring it in for a oil change, the cheapest grease monkey gets the job, does it and returns it, without going over your bike. Just thinking out loud.

OH boy..oil..oil..oil...Yummm...get me some oil....

Seriously, what oil you use depends alot on you..the only thing I don't suggest is full dino...only because Vic oil is a semi-syn, ..as far as weight, Vic is 20W/40, but many folks here use m/c oil with a other weights...just make sure it meets the JASO MA as stated above..syn, semi-syn, brand, weight, it's your choice.

now oil fitlers, and car tires on a Vision, that's a whole other thing....

Just finished a 2800 mile trip to the Grand Canyon. Didn't check my oil once. Might help if I knew how.
I pay my dealer some money - he says he puts in some oil and a chrome filter somewhere.
I'm happy. The bike's happy. My dealer's happy. Who needs the agrivation? Pay 30K for a bike - and go cheap? Life's TOO short ....

You're right... It's gonna cost me a flat 276.00 for the 500 mile inspection. Do I really think their gonna go through the oil with a fine tooth comb, check and tighten every bolt to factory specs?..No Will a "Victory Certified Technician" be performing this task?...No. But I have to take it in and let them do this one so as not to void my warranty. After this, unless something major happens the dealer won't see my bike again. My last bike had 50 miles shy of 95000 miles and I carried it to the dealer one...and that was for a gas tank recall.

He's going to change the oil, ride it around the block and say it's fine.

Aggravation???....If taking your's to the dealer makes you happy them by all means do so. Oh Im sure the dealer's happy too! When I bought my CC Saturday they said they were taking down to the service dept. to "go over it, check it out, and detail it for me". I checked the oil at 300 miles and the oil wasn't even on the full mark? (halfway between the marks) Now, I know the motor has to break in. But did it lose a half qt. (estimating here) in 300 miles?...No. They didn't even check it. Which proves my point to your satement, "I pay my dealer some money - he says he puts in some oil and a chrome filter somewhere".

Go cheap??....What makes you say this? When I work on my bike I KNOW the work is DONE and DONE right. I KNOW the CARE that is taken while doing so. The service dept. won't take the time to be careful, cause he's got to get this out of the way to get to the next one. My bike is just a speed bump between him and quitting time. I know wrenching isn't for everyone and I'm not implying that. But, neither is taking to the dealer.

To all who don't know, "donetracey, is our resident passionate oil thread responder, it is his way or the highway!" No harm intended, cause he has a hotyoungcutiehangingonhim! But its his way of taking care of his concrete steed.

So, to summarize, donetracey enjoys a good oil thread, so pour on! I don't know that he has ever givin any scientific proof of his oil, but he did stay at a motel 6 once!

What's 'sad' - is many of you don't trust your dealer. I guess I'm lucky.

And I was changing oil before most of you were born. Worked in a Shell Repair Garage from 1961-64 while in University and did all my own wrenching for MANY years - including engine rebuilds - I know OIL.

At age 67, I ain't getting on the ground for ANYTHING!!!!

You're absolutely right! Bout' as far as I can pick him up and throw him...lol. I do know there are good one's out there. But it's been my experience that they are a few and far between. And, the majority tell ya what they think you wanna hear.

Well, I have always gone by the "hot" number in oil. I use Shell Rotella T6 5W-40 fully synthetic oil in my Vision. The cool number (the first number) in oil weight is far less important, in my opinion. At cold temperatures, the polymers are coiled up and allow the oil to flow as their low numbers indicate. As the oil warms up, the polymers begin to unwind into long chains that prevent the oil from thinning as much as it normally would. The result is that at 100 degrees C, the oil has thinned only as much as the higher viscosity number indicates. Another way of looking at multi-vis oils is to think of a 20W-40 as a 20 weight oil that will not thin more than a 40 weight would when hot. The Shell Rotella T6 is MA rated and I think quiets down the transmission a good bit. The price at Wal-Mart for this product is unbeatable, $25 for an oil change is pretty cheap. My 2 cents worth.

OK let me try an example. If the oil in the bottle sitting on the shelf at the dealer waiting for someone to buy it is 25W90 semi synthetic then I want to be able to go to the parts store down the road and buy 25W90 semi synthetic in what ever color bottle looks the prettiest. I'm cheap, but want a comparable or better product. This is one of the reasons I bought a Vision 8Ball, comparable or better but cheaper. While I appreciate everyone's opion and respnse the original question still needs an answer. I'm not trying to start a debate nor get into one. I tried searching. Also I do trust my dealer (Freedom Powersports in Cumming Ga, shameless plug). I don't really like wrenching on stuff, but I'm too cheap to go in for every oil change when I'm logging 10-12 thousand miles per year. I know they sell an oil change kit, but it's around $60.00. I'm hoping to go cheaper. Thanks again for ya'lls help.

FULL SYNTHETIC --- NOW GET OUT AND RIDE. I'm STUCK IN IOWA WAITING FOR DA PLANE WHEN I COULD BE RIDING AND NOT READING ABOUT "What oil should I use?" (done in a girly voice). I'll be the midnight rider when I get home.

We use to put little marks here and there to see if they check thing. I know one guy who loosened his return throttle just to see if they would catch it. No and he marked something ells and they blue that to.
Get out your book and start checking things your self. You'll get to know your bike and maybe some day help out some one ells

"She" can 'coerse' me down as far as the bed - any lower than that, I have to think about how I'm going to get back up. Just part of the 'age' thing. You're supposed to learn from the lessons of your youth - and your years. And apply that 'learning' in helping you to enjoy 'old' age. Ain't nobody enjoying it more than me! I actually enjoy the 'OIL' threads 'cuz they amuse the hell out of me! I 'change my oil' with my beautiful wife as often as I can !

This photo is from the SOUTHWEST VICTORY RALLY last week - Grand Canyon !
