i was wondering what do most people do for trunk racks. ive seen prices from $360 UP to (ouch!) $500 !!

I need a little more room to carry stuff when i ride two up. but from what im hearing the trunk racks/ trunk has a weight limit.? so $500 to be able to carry 15lbs? (is that the max number?)

my girlfriend pointed out a new rack that she saw online, http://www.cycleopsusa.com/Inferno/1.jpg

But where in the heck you would attach the bungies too?

if it wasnt for riding two up from time to time i would never consider a trunk rack. Especially if it is true about the very low weight limit.?

Best way to attach anything to the trunk rack is to use a web-net and secure the hooks to the mounting posts. As for the weight limit, I can't answer that one.

I have the Victory OEM trunk rack on my 08 Vision.  I never new about the 15 lb weight limit? I use the rack all the time during trips and I'm sure I'm exceeding the 15 lb weight liimit.  I use the Iron Rider Roll Bag   http://www.dowcopowersports.com/products/motorcycle_luggage/iron_rider/detail.cfm?item=50156-00 and strap it to the trunk rack.  My wife stuffs it full and I strap it on, never had a problem.  I bought my trunk rack on Ebay and paid a little less than retail but not much.

I had the Victory trunk rack and it was a POS! The chrome flaked off it after a year and a half. I upgraded to Will's rack (www.cycleopsusa.com) and even though it costs more than OEM, it is very well made and the powdercoating is flawless. I use a large trunk bag (can't remember the brand) when we travel and it weighs WAY more than 15 lbs when fully loaded. Never had a problem with it [YET] LOL.

Thanks C.H.L., I'm just having a hard time dropping 5bills for a little piece of metal at this point. If it did something more like have a built in brake light or something I can maybe over look the $500.00 . That's just a lot of money for something so small. And I won't use all the time. I could get a pc 5 with auto tuner for about the same price as that rack. 8(

Like I have said in the past, I'm a cheap bastard. But I'm a cheap bastard with tools and a little time. So, like the arm rests I made, I will be making a rack. I will post it, and a how too when I'm done. Hoping to only put $40 into it.

I picked up a spare trunk top off Ebay and now I'm waiting for TravelinMan to get his units into some type of production. But I'm also thinking about checking around locallly to see if someone can fab something together. My idea is to have one trunk cover with a rack and one without so I can switch back and forth between.

While I do like the cyclops rack and I'm sure it is top shelf quality....well....honestly....it is way too nice for my needs. I need a simple basic functional rack. It doesn't have to look the shiniest or the coolest or anything along these lines. Don't need the durability of powder coat and don't want or need the shine of chrome. I just need a platform that I can toss some luggage on.

I just received my cycleops V wing rack last night. The paint and quality is outstanding and it seems very durable. I have doubt it can handle the load I will put on it. Somtimes it is worth paying the little extra for style and quality.

There are several locations for the bungee to hook to on the "Flamed" trunk rack or as Will calls it "Inferno". There are several designed pictures on the VMC that Will has posted, If you are considering this you might want to take a look at it. This rack is bigger that his other designs. Which in turn is bigger than the Victory trunk rack.

Is it just the cheap in me or does anyone else think it wrong for a trunk rack to cost more than a trailer hitch (including the wiring)? Come on. Harley sells their chrome trunk racks for $129.

...to me it's like this. I wanted/needed a trunk rack. At the time there was no cycleops or other folk and I couldn't find one anywhere else cheaper at the time, so sure, I dropped the bills. For me it was a very good investment, I would like a wing or flame from CO, but I'm too cheap right now...

I'm gonna order the cycleopsusa trunk rack next week. I just received my chrome uppers and lowers from them and they're beautiful. I have looked at the Vic racks and they don't compare(IMO) to the cycleops product.

I got the black Winged-V from Cycleops for Christmas and absolutely love it. It mounted up easily and looks great.I added 2 flag mounts to the back end, which helps to hold a bag in place.

I have a Cycleops trunk rack. Nice quality and it's very useful. Got a couple of flag staffs for it too.
If you don't put something on it your bag will likely mar the chrome.
You can buy a cover from Cycleops. My wife made a nice micro-fiber cover that fits over the trunk rack to protect the chrome.

I like the looks of the Chrome but as u said it will more than likely get scratched by bags and common use, I saw they have a cover for it but its another $100!

As I mentioned, you can make your own microfiber cover for less than $100.

That's good u can make one, if the average person couldn't make one would be over $600 for a Chrome rack and cover!

I have been looking at other trunk racks. So far my favorites are the Harley rack on a sidecar, on their Street Glide trike, and the rack from a Yamaha Venture. Would have to cover the logo in the center with a Victory emblem. Can buy any of those and still fill my truck with fuel a couple times.

Somewhere I saw posted someone mounted a Goldwing GL1800 rack. It looked fine on the bike and is more functional as far as mounting bags to it and also a little larger. That said I use a medium Helen Two Wheels stuff sack bag that will hold a tremendous amount of stuff on my Victory rack. I also use her straps and have the mesh sack and a few of the mesh bags to hold dirty clothes. The mesh sack can hold wet stuff (swimsuits) or incidental items like sunscreen etc. This bag is great for unusual sized stuff like tennis shoes and the like that take up a lot of room but don't necessarily weigh much. I can also say that we have mounted a pretty good load on the rack without complaint or damage.
Just search for Helen Two Wheel and you will find a link. This is adventure touring stuff and built tough and WATERPROOF!
If you get one of the bags get the adjustable straps, bungees do not work on the Victory rack without chance of scratching the trunk paint.

I'm glad to find so many of you guys happy with your racks, both in function and quality. While I'm here I'll chime in on a few comments.

First, don't let the designs fool you, all the design elements were also created with added purpose.

The comment questioning where to put the bungees. Every design element/cutout in the decks is made so it will accommodate most bungee hooks, even the newer thick molded plastic ones. If you also look closely, the Retro has 4 triangular punch outs specifically for securing points that can't slide out of position when secured. THe Winged V also has one of these at the rear, not to mention all the curved wing slots which are also to allow slip free hook anchoring virtually all the way around. And on the Inferno, just look at it, it's like a jungle gym for bungee cords!   And of course you also always have the legs to hook to whether from over the top and around, or even through some design elements directly and to the legs . And speaking of legs, our trunk rack legs are 1/2" taller than OEM to facilitate easier cleaning underneath as well as when securing bungees.

The next thing to know is regarding capacity. I do not place a load limit on these. These babies are rock solid and fully TIG, not MIG welded, the difference being a TIG weld os superior, both in penetration and more importantly is a more forgiving weld compared to the more brittle MIG weld, making our welds very strong. I have put one on theshop floor and placed well over 70 lbs on it, and it would have happily carried more. What limits your weight is really the trunk lid itself, that being the weakest link. You are supporting everything on only 4 points in a molded deck lid, and you're doing so in places where you've drilled holes, further weakinging the 'foundation'. Now we do use 3/4" wide CNCd circular cup bases for the legs to sit in and distribute the load further, but the lid is still emphatically the weak link. For anyone wishing or needing to carry above average loads, the wider the 'feet' and thereby less weight per square inch, the safer you can carry more without fear of a leg going through your lid, especially if you hit a good bump. If anyone needs such feet, I'll be glad to work something up for you.

As for pricing, most inexpensive utility type racks are made of thin, fairly small diameter steel tube. They're also mostly made in China. This makes them very inexpensive in materials, labor, and finishing costs. They do the job I'm sure for those who only need or want utility. Billet aluminum, fully CNC milled racks like ours, or in some cases the ones I also make by hand like the Inferno, and all made right here in the USA, the dollar differences are going to be great. Add to that our exceptional chrome, which i expensive to get to the level we demand, ours will cost you more. THe added benefits however are higher value back on resale of your bike, more functionality, long lasting and beutiful finish, easier cleaning, and on and on. Add it all up and the diference in the dollars spead out over the years you own it are next to nothing.

And our racks may list for $500, but you guys get them for $450 in chrome, and only $350 or so in Gloss Black. Just be sure to get with me for the discount code to get the 10% off.

Oh, where are my manners... A Happy Easter or Happy Passover to all.

thanks for committment to Vision and the explanation of the weight limitation of the lid.  It makes sense that the weak link is the plastic lid where the four posts rest.

Since the trunk lid is of course the weakest link, what is the weight your racks? Average..
