What iPod update? Are you talking about the cable, or is it something else???

The iPod update that corrects the mute problem on the gen3 Nano, another problem I had that appears to be gone is when you double click the tuning button + or - it is supposed to skip 10 songs up or down but instead oftentimes it would just lock up..... So far so good.

Yup, I talked to the engineer at Victory yesterday and it is version 4.13 of the audio firmware. They are working on some more upgardes to the audio system that should be done soon and then they will do a broad distribution upgarde. This upgrade is just for people that need nano 3 support. Your dealer can download it from Victory and upload it to your bike with the digital wrench.

Cool, I need to get mine too! The best player for an iPod is the Vision, even with stock speakers!

I thought it was great too. Worked fine the first time, now it doesn't. Unable to control playlists or tracks. Went to the dealer yesterday for the update and they haven't heard of it. $90.00 worth of wire and the only control I have is the volume. 2nd time with this reply. Need to vent. Sorry and Thanks

I had a few problems where it would play, wouldn't play, wouldn't go through play list and so on. After the last service, all has been working fine everytime. Try, disconnecting your iPod cable and reinstalling. Also, make sure your iPod is charged and that it functions normal on its own Turn it off and turn it back on again. Plug it back into your Vision before starting and have the radio switch off. After starting, turn on the radio and select aux and see if it picks up normally and functions correctly. Just a thought. Let me know how it turns out.

I wanted to add this here to see if anyone else has this particluar problem. I just got my Vision on Saturday (3/29/08) and I rode about 5 miles when the iPod stopped playing. I have gen2 (30GB hard drive, not nano). When I stopped for gas, I looked at the iPod and it showed the Victory logo, and was completely locked up. So much so that I couldn't even reboot the iPod manually. I had to wait until I got home. The screen was still displayed, and the battery was almost completly dead, and I was only 1 hr later. So I tried it again today and it stopped playing again. This time it wasn't as locked up, and I was able to reboot it. But when I put it back on the cable, I got an engine noise. I wiggled the cord and I think it might be shorted out. That could be the problem I guess, but I wasn't getting a short that I knew of when it locked the first time. Anyone have something similar and does anyone know if this audio upgrade works for gen2. Also, I saw something in here that the hard drive ones lock up. Is this true, and if so, does the upgrade/fix help? Thanks for the help. Also, my AM/Fm reception is poor, so I really need to get this fixed. Oh, and it doesn't appear to be charging the iPod at all.

divesharc, I have been useing my 80 gig hard drive iPod, with mixed results, but discovered something just recently. The cable end seems to open at the seam, allowing poor contact with the iPod connection, and it makes the thing sound like hell. I wrapped the end of mine tightly with f-4 tape (Self-vulcanizing rubber electrical tape) and it plays mucho better, and the lock-up has yet to happen again. When my iPod DID lock up before, I had to take it off the bike, and let the battery die before it would let me screw with it...just showed the victory emblem. Check your cord end to see if the seam is opening, it may contribute to the problem. I also wrapped my iPod in a shop rag, and then bubble wrap to dampen vibes.....-----Metalguy

Las Vegas, Nevada USA baby!
My old 60gb original version iPod also freezes up. I checked the connector, and it is tight. Shows the Victory logo, and after I charged it back up it worked again. Then this weekend it froze when I tried to skip a song when heading from Las Vegas to Phoenix. I left it in the Vision connected overnight at my mom's in PHX, and this morning the Victory logo was gone, and it said CHARGED. I got it running again, and then on the third song it froze up again.

Eh? No music crossing the desert? I was getting spoiled. I don't feel like springing the bucks for satellite radio neither! I want whats I wants, and I wants it now, pal! My music, on my iPod, and through my Vision's speakers see?
That's my rant, and I'm stickin' to it see?

Metalguy, that is the EXACT same thing that happened to me. It almost seemed though like the Vision was draining the power because I had charged it the night before and only used it maybe 15 minutes before it froze. It had the same Victory logo stuck on the screen and wouldn't shut off. WHen I got home maybe 40 minutes later and plugged it into the computer, it said low battery, wait. I think the cord could be bad and that helps to confirm it for me. Question though, are you still using one of the hard drive iPod's and if so, since you fixed the seam, have you had any further problems. And one further, did you get any "update" or patch for the iPod problems that were described for the nanos? I really appreciate the quick respone and I can tell that I'm going to be coming here a lot. This is a great resource. Thanks again.

I posted this on an earlier thread about the Hard Drive I-Pods. Based on the warning from Daimondrmp and my own experience, I will not use my 30GB Hard Drive I-Pod on the Vision....

There is some background info on the Vision section of the VMC website, including a warning from Diamondrmp (who I believe works at a Victory Dealer)....try this link and see if it works for you.

http://forums.thevmc.com/megabbs/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=42913&p...

Just in case the link doesn't work, here is a copy of the original warning that was posted.

**********************
Posted by Diamondrmp:

Hey all Gary (woodlandvic) and I attended the Vision Service Class yesterday Sept, 28 2007. We got a lot of information on the Vision and I will post a thread with some pictures.

We were told to let all of you know which includes dealers, sales and mechanics, DO NOT, DO NOT, DO NOT use your IPod on the Vision. These instructions, warning is limited to the IPods that have the "Hard" drives in them. The resonance from the Vision will destroy the hard drive. We were told the IPods that have the "Flash" drives are OK.
***********************

To add to this....My IPod Video (Hard Drive model) locked up and stopped working about half way through a 30 minute demo ride. Following the ride I coud not get any of the controls on the IPod to work. Took it home and connected it to the computer, still nothing. Left if connected and when I checked it again in a few hours it was OK and it seemes to be working ok since then.

Hope this helps.

divesharc, I have had no recurring problems with my hard-drive iPod since I fixed the connector. BUT! I will be purchasing a nano, just because I anticipate hard drive issues in the future due to vibration. I have not gotten the iPod update software for my bike, but most likely will see about it next service. I am thinking I want to go with a couple of refurbished iPod nanos just for the bike.
I believe that the "seam" problem could be why many are having problems even with the flash drive iPods. It can't hurt to check that connector! ----Metalguy

So Cal
I was at the dealer sat. Decided to get the ipod cable also went and bought an 8 gig. nano (gen 3 ?) It works great. The only problem I have is the back button (-) you need to hit it once to start the beginning of the song and hit it a second time to play the previous song. If you do it too many times, it freezes, just hit the (+ and it starts working again. It did stop once when I grabbed the connector, I think that was my fault. I also took a piece of foam and slit it down the middle and stuck the ipod through to cut down on vibration. Having it flop around didnt seem like a good idea.

Now, all I have to do is learn how to use iTunes. Im a little tech challenged when it comes to that stuff. Does anyone know if I can use windows media to dowload to the ipod?

cjnoho, no, the iPod only really works with iTunes. But, it's not too bad. If you install iTunes it will automatically go out and search your computer for all of you music that you already have. There are some challenges to it, but with a little time you'll get it. My only suggestion is that if you have someone else load music on it, say a friend's computer, when you get back to your computer, it will "sync" it automatically. Basically, it erases all that music you put on it if its not already on your computer. You can stop this by clicking on the Ipod when it shows to the left and check "manually manage music." Good luck with it, and I really like the iPods.

So my dealer wrote me back and they have the new update. I checked my software version last night and I have 4.08A. My question is, has anyone seen a difference in the regular iPod (hard drive) with the new version. I wrapped the iPod in a soft towel last night, and it still played for ten minutes then quit. Just wondering whether this will solve the problem. I hate to spend $200+ on a nano when I have a perfectly good hard drive version. If anyone here used a regular iPod before the update and after it, let me know if you saw any real difference. I hope this fixes the problem. Having music was one of the main draws for getting this type of cruiser, and the iPod is way better than listening to the radio (which the reception sin't that great anyways, going to have the dealer check that out as well). If this is a vibration problem, I'm really surprised that they don't design a molded foam cushion or something like that to help with the problem. They advertise the feature of being able to use your iPod, but don't say anything about it not working with the hard driver version. I won't lie, probably wouldn't have lept me from buying the bike, but it might have made me look a little more at the wing or beamer. But, I don't like the looks as much, and I think the Vision handles better. But still, they should at least make their customers aware of the problem. OK, done bitching.

There will never be a firmware update that will have any effect on the iPod hard drive issue. If you talk with Apple or any manufacture of hard drives they will they you the drives will usually fail on any motorcycle due to the inherent vibration and harmonics. Yes you can wrap it in foam and other isolating materials but there is still a risk the hard drive will be damaged. I have had friends that had the hard drives fail in their iPods and other mp3 players from running with them or placing them on a tread mill while running and the movement and vibration caused the devices to fail. The safest and best thing to do is use a memory based device that doesn’t have a hard drive.

BTW Gold Wing and BMW will tell you not to use a hard drive based iPod or mp3 player also. A friend of mine has a Gold Wing and his hard drive mp3 player failed and when he talked to his dealer they told him didn't you read the memo Honda has published saying to only use memory based devices.

Ok....I was at the BX yesterday, looking at the new 8 gig and 4 gig nano's.....And I was told that they are HARD drive units. Is this true??? If they are, can anyone tell me which iPods are flash drive, and which are hard drive, so I buy the right one??? PLEASE? I only want to buy once for the bike...I am a bit corn-fused here. My hard drive 80 gig still works fine, I just want to make the switch before damage happens.-----------Metalguy
