I've heard of it.......but for the life of me I'll never understand why one buys a $20K motorcycle......probably the best handling touring bike in the world, and ruins it by putting a car tire on it!!!!! IMHO

Savage, its a good thing to know....Being stuck in the middle of nowhere with a flat and no bike stores. Gets you back on the road in a hurry.

Most of the "Darksiders" seem to do it for the tire life of 30 to 40 thousand miles. Other than that there seems no other advantage. More ground contact is mentioned as plus in towing and straight line braking, but there is some discusion about more surface area not being good during wet conditions due to hydroplaning.

In my opinion, Motorcycle tires have more dynamic needs durring turning and cornering. A tire that is softer is going wear faster than a car tire that is designed to be used with 3 other tires.
We as 2 wheelers depend on 50% fewer tires for cornering and control. So the trade off is shorter tire life in exchange for my life......Which my wife seems to think is important

I take it that you've never run on the dark side. Rear braking is exceptional especially in the rain. I've ran more than 30K miles on them and found no negatives. If you don't think they will handle well in the curves, go to the Valkyrie Road riders site and look at some Smoking Joe's posts on his results. This guy rides the Dragon very often as he lives i Tennessee and has some amazing pics on what can be done. If you don't want to ride on one, OK, but for us that have, there's nothing better.

when i had a car tire on my vulcan 2000. it was a good year triple tread and it was amazing in the rain!!! it was a "water type" tire.. my braking was also strong. i know this because when i first had the car tire installed i almost went over the handle bars the first time i applied the brakes hard.. the main reason i went to a CT on the vulcan was.. that bike was known for tire life in the 3500-5000 range... and it was a 200/60-16 rear tire $$$... after i went to the CT i no longer had to plan tire changes before a trip, i also ran over a nail and was able to plug it and ride. I rode with that plug for about 1.5 years , before i got New wheels for it. For that bike the CT was amazing. i bought a$95 tire that was on the bike for 3 years and still looked like new.. and to speak of handling.. I rode the bike from PA to the Dragon and then rode the dragon back and forth 4 times with the car tire, keeping up with my friends.. The bike never lost control and i didnt go down in a ball of flames.. lol and if it can handle a 800+lbs 2053cc bike on the Dragon then im sure day to day riding is nothing.. It was such a pleasure to NOT have to take the rear wheel off !!! Just a belt adjustment from time to time and thats it.. cut down on maintanence costs and paid for itself may times over.. i think there is even a video on youtube of a gold wing on the dragon with a CT. and he is flying through there....

I don't know if anyone has provided a rational explanation for this, but why isn't there a more suitable CT for a motorcycle available? If there was a slightly more narrower tire that wouldn't have clearance issues as I hear some have, then why make a MC tire at all? I understand there are other things to take in to consideration that I have read that a CT on the Vision will rub or it can't be lowered as with with the standard tires. Maybe I've misread, but just never for the life of me understand why not stock the cheaper, longer lasting CT right next to the short life, much more expensive MCT next to each other if there is such an advantage.

Not trying to stir a pot, but I have wrestled with this since I first heard about it many years ago but cannot bring myself to actually do it. Having not to take off the rear tire at least twice a year sounds good, every two years would sound better.

Its early and I just woke up, but one reason why I can think of a company that makes Both CT and MT is, MTs cost roughly 2 times or more of the price of a CT. and when u hold each. One in your left hand and one in your right, you'll clearly see and feel which one has more product to it... plus the CTs has a lot more tread depth... when u hold both next to each other, u feel how flimsy the sidewalls are with a motorcycle tire. No wonder they are so easy to get flats. And then u have tire life span... MT costs over 2 times the price and gets only a fraction of the life span of a CT.. and if your a company making tires and u could sell a CT that might last a person the life of the bike, or u can make a MT that needs replaced once a year or once ever two, why would u stop making it people will continue to buy it?

Beside the countless youtube videos of people running them on goldwings and then people like me who actually ran a car tire and then Slayed the Dragon and (didnt go down in a ball of flames) it just Works.. its not for everyone. but neither is the vision... I would say a CT is more for a very serious touring person. or in the case of my last bike, a person that doesnt want to replace the rear tire every 3500-5000 miles at Over $200 a pop...

saying why would a car tire company make a motorcycle tire if the car tire would be the answer to it all? Well why would victory make another touring bike is the Vision is the answer to all touring bikes? Because like the vision its not for everyone.. Neither is the car tire.

I remember when i went to the car tire, i thought omg how is this going to handle.. and with in a few miles i thought to myself.. thats it? thats all the difference? you only notice it in first gear.. and keep in mind when i ran my CT on my last bike i had a Wide one!! 225/55-16 ! that sucker was the same tire a Caddy CTS used..

thanks Arkainzeye, I can reason with what you are saying, and it is one of those I need to get past to try. Though, I think in my lifetime, I may never will. I'm not overall convinced that there is no difference and I do not want to compromise the feel of the Vision one ioda. Even with the steering issue I'm having with the bearings I'm looking at pulling all the bushings and replacing them when I replace the bearings. I've asked about the wheel bearings many time and I'm told that it takes a lot of miles to kill those, but I'm still apt to change them too.

Running a CT is not something I will "try", but if I do it, it will be a committal so I want to be absolutely sure I want to live with what comes my way when I do. I have not doubt that a CT will "handle" the Dragon, or any thing else for that matter. But how does it handle it is my concern. Convince me there is absolutely no difference in running a CT verses a MCT. I'm not referring to braking or rain riding, I'm talking about the twisties and evasive manuevers.

oh there is a difference in handling between a CT and a MT.. same as there is a difference between bike A and bike B.. its just something you get used too, then its No longer an issue.. if you went from a sportster to a vision the sportster guy might say.. omg this bike is heavy and long and hard to get around at slow speeds in a parking lot. but after a week i bet that same person wouldnt say that or at least not to the same level they did when first getting on it.. it takes a very short time to adapt. Just like going from one bike to another..

you would probably need a belt replacement before you would need a new rear tire. thats the advantage.. less down time and more ride time and a out of pocket savings.. =)

So, if a guy is inclined to go to the darkside, which brand and size CT fits and works well on the VV's?

i wish i had a spare rear wheel to put a CT on it and then switch IF I wanted to.. ive used a CT in the past but not on a vision. off topic, today i washed the bike. holy crap that rear wheel builds up the road dirt.. and then is almost impossible to clean with out being a PITA..

Kumho 195/55RF16 The RF stands for Run Flat. About 30 psi feels about right.

Keep in mind that a 195 might rub a hitch. If you have or plan on having a hitch you might want to go with a 185
