Well Sunday's ride did not go so well... While raising my TCML-SE 1500 pound lift with my 2009 Vision on tied down on it something went terribly wrong. I heard a loud pop and with that I had a 900 pound motrocycle and 600 pound lift coming down on me from approx 2 and half feet above the floor. Pinned me against the garage refrigerator and the floor. I was home alone at the time so it took me a while to get freed. Gas was pouring out the the bike and I had to get out.

Apparently a 1 1/4" "C' clip is all that holds the scissors sections on the center pivot shaft. That is what popped off and caused this mess.

Bike damage estimate remains to be seen.
Be carefull if you have and are using one of these lifts. In my opinion the "C" clip is not safe enough and this is a design flaw. Waiting to see if the company that sells it stands behind it and makes things right.

Boy this sound familiar kinda, had my vision on the harbor freight bike lift roughly 3 feet in the air last year and a rachet strap didnt have enough wraps on the center spool and it slipped and over it went....faster than a speeding bullit. I'm just glad that my newfoundlands were on the other side of the lift laying on the floor when it cut loose. Close to $4000.00 damage when it was all said and done. Every thing being plastic and it all shifted even the radio being in the center with nothing hitting it other than all the plastic shifting had the clear plastic water tight cover get cracked so that had to be sent out to be fixed.

The paint only comes from victory as they havent cut the paint codes loose so that held everything up. the parts came pretty quick, but it never comes quick enough during the riding season in june.

Other than being sick to my stomach I was all right. I had just swapped over to allstate 6 months earlier so you know they were just loving me that day. the adjuster wrote it off to comp and my rate didnt go up which was very cool of her.

The damn bike is heavy isnt it?? Ugh!! glad your going to be all right, keep us informed of your adventure

Eric

I know we all know the dangers so I don't think I'm telling you something you don't know. We need reminders, and one thing that I learned from the very early days working at a gas station and putting stuff on jacks and lifts is to check, and recheck. At the station, when putting something on the lift, we would inspect the lift by raising it before we brought the car in. Then we would bring the lift to the car and make sure it was on good lift points. Then we would lift the vehicle until the pressure was just leaving the tires, then we would shake the car. I've carried that habit throughout my life and have applied to other things, especially lifting my motorcycle. I still have one of those Sears jacks, but I'm at the point that I need something like the sissor jack. When I put the bike on the jack, I'll lift until the front tire comes off the ground, and then I shake the bike, and then I raise and lock at the first point, and do some shaking. I constantly recheck to make sure the bike is still on the same pad points throughout the work. The shed I work in is a hazard to itself, I don't want the bike coming off that jack onto me. When I did the exhaust last I just used the jack to up right it, but kept it on the wheels. Reading this is making me think even more not to use this jack beyond that ever again. I'll be looking on eBay for a good used sissor jack for future work. Of course, checkout the c-clamps before lifting. So we should ride in a way to be able to ride another day, we should be lift in such a way that we'll ride another day. And yes, this bike is heavy, and out of balance with the trunk on, on those sears motorcycle jacks.

Those are for the enduros and the likes....

Sorry to hear this. Please post pictures of the lift if possible and where it failed.
I have the same lift table and now I am going to look at welding some safety tabs on the shaft in case the e-clip fails.
I use my lift all of the time for my Vision and my wife's trike which weights 1350 lbs.

I would replace with a threaded bolt. Thanks for sharing, makes it more clear of what happen. Death trap with the clamp in my opinion.

Thank God you are all right and that you got out from that without injury!

While the C clip may not be the safest way to secure that pivot point, by design there should not have been any side pressure on that joint to cause the C clip to pop off. I would check to see if other factors such as a broken weld may have played a roll in what happened. Regardless though the manufacturer of the lift, depending on age, should stand behind their product and replace the lift (hell if I was the manufacturer I would pay to get the damaged lift sent back to me for evaluation of the failure) and pay for the damages to your bike. If in the end they won't work with you, you should contact the consumer product safety commission and report the failure.

Yes, I agree there should not have been any side pressure. As part of my pre lift checkout I check to see that everything is in the proper positions before I even connect the air. I keep the bike strapped to the lift at all times. Thank god I had the straps on or it most certainly would have been much worse had the bike not been tied down. Even though there should not have been side pressure the lift design is inadequate in having a simple c clip as the only retainer

I'm sure the manual calls for a lot of "DO NOT"s and "WARNINGS". While the c-clamp may seem adequate for the most ideal of conditions, putting a 900 bike on the lift is not ideal. Many bridges have fallen due to design failure with the engineers thinking that what they designed was more than adequate. Just saying.

My lift has a large allen head bolt and a nut securing the scissor section, I had to go check it cuz' y'all wuz talking about it! Glad to hear you managed to wiggle out from underneath it. I'm pretty sure nobody would have found me till morning. I'd be buying a new lift and that one would find its way to a scrapyard or cut and used for other projects.

I have a Titan lift and I looked it over after you posted this and I am unable to find anything to make me question whether it would hold 1500lbs. Thank goodness.
