My longtime riding buddy is a diehard Goldwing rider. It's his opinion that there is no better full-dress luxury touring bike than the Goldwing. I am a former Goldwing owner, and of the opinion that the Vision is a very viable alternative. For me-it's a better alternative.

During a recent discussion, my buddy made the statement that he could see why someone might go to a Vision from a Harley or something else, but he doesn't believe very many would give up a Goldwing for a Vision.

So, the question is--what full-dress luxury touring bike did you ride before making the move to a Vision? I'm primarily interested in bikes that would generally be compared directly to the Goldwing, fully dressed luxo-barges. Sport tourers and "baggers" are really in different categories for the purpose of this poll.

I had to add my own option, the VV is my first touring bike, and I'm VERY glad for that.

Traded in our beloved 2003 Victory V92TC on the vision-72,000 trouble free miles through 14 states+ Canada & Mexico. Great bike, my only complaint was the front suspension was a bit harsh and I miss those big saddlebags.

I got my motorcycle license in May 2009. My ride was the Piaggio MP3 500 scooter. I rode that around for about 4 months. August 2009 flew down to NC from NY and drove my Victory back home and never looked back!!!

I switched over from a Vulcan Classic bobber. It blew having to carry my helmet with me everywhere and not being able to carry ANYTHING. No saddle bags or tank bag or anything. Completely old school. Now I have everything. I still have a yamaha bobber. I like to think of it as having the bare minimum and the end all be all kind of bikes. Best of both worlds.

Ronnie,

The Yamaha/Star Venture has NEVER been a V-Twin, it has always been a V-4, I had a '86 Venture Royale that I put 86K miles on in 3 years and when I switched to the GL1500 Goldwing in '99 Yamaha had just reintroduced the Venture (it had been out of production from '94 to '98) as cruiser, fork mounted fairing, styled touring bike which has remained unchanged even up to the '12 model year (it even has a cassette player still!). It is a fantastic bike for the price and they sell just enough for Yamaha/Star to keep it in production. Rumor is though that they are going to change the engine out next year to a detuned version of 1800cc engine from the current V-Max and update the stereo system (of which the handlebar controls are some of the best).

Fitted with Corbin bags, Andrews 402 cams, custom chip, 80 spoke wires, Corbin seat and dresser bars with BreakAway cruise control, Samson Avenger pipes with custom baffles, this bike was my long distance ride before my Vision.

I came from the Goldwing. Ive always been a Wing-er. Ive ridden many a miles on the GL1200 and GL1500.....but I actually prefer the GL1200 so I searched and paid a premium for a super clean, un-molested GL1200. Superb touring bike......great machine.

There was absolutely nothing wrong with my Wing when I went looking for a new bike......I just wanted a new bike. I rode the GL1800......wow, what a fantastic motorcycle. Powerful, smooth.....lots of gadgets.

The main problem....and the only reason I likely didnt buy a GL1800......my knees rubbed the fairing. I didnt take any measurements but in the leg area I felt the GL1800 was very cramped compared to the previous models. It wasnt comfortable for any longer then about 1 1/2 hours or so. Yeah I *COULD* buy this or that highway peg......but when it gets chilly your stuck either with your feet comfortably out in the cold wind......or cramped and tucked behind the fairing.

After riding the Vision I believe I found the most comfortable motorcycle Ive ever set on......period.

Ive done 33 1/2 hours in one setting on the Vision......and could have done more had I not been hallucinating being eaten by a dinosaur....but thats another story.

I had a Goldwing 1800, nice bike and I can't say it had any bad habits. It simply didn't have any soul or any character if you will.

Right you are. I confused it with the Kawasaki.

Um, the Honda Goldwing was manufactured, not simply assembled, in Marysville, Ohio from 1981 to 2010, and while all new Honda motorcycles are now being produced back in Japan, for a very long time the manufacturing and assemble plant in Marysville provided jobs with good incomes to many Americans.  In fact, Honda is such a good company that when they closed the Marysville plant at the end of 2010 they gave every employee the opportunity to retiree early if they were within 5 years of retirement, relocate to a job at another Honda plant with full compensation for moving expenses and temporary housing if needed, or a full years pay if they took none of the previous options.  I don't care where the money goes in the global corporate world as long as a product is made by American workers, even Harley-Davidson buys their forks and shocks from Showa which is a Honda owned company, and their brakes come from Brembo which is a European company.

My last was a Kawasaki Voyager XII.  Very comfy for the driver but not as good as the Vision for the passenger, per my passenger wife.  But OMG did it run!  Low 11 second times and still pulling at 130.  Basically a Kawasaki 1000, bored and water cooled with tupperware.

Years ago I had one of the first tourers, a Yamaha XS11 Venturer (not a Venture).  It was an XS11 that came from the factory with a Vetter SS, bags, trunk and KQ seat.   Coming as a factory kit you got the special paint and badging.  The dealer could assemble one out of options, but it didn't get the trim and badges.  Not many made but a heck of a bike.  Very comfy, and also, very fast.  The XS11 was the first factory large production bike to break into the 10s for a 1/4 mile.

My VV is the best of the three, but I do wish it had a bit more go.  I hate to go all HD and start adding options, but I may have to.  I ran some time trials last week and it's a tad slower than my stock daily driver cage.  That was very disappointing.

I came from a Yamaha Royal Star Venture ( V-4), whaich was a great touring bike. I tried to like the Honda gl1800, but I preferrd the ride of the Yamaha, until the Vision came along. Now I have as many miles on the Vision as I did the Yammie and I still love my Vision. As far as preferring one style of bike over another, it is really base on personal preferenc. I did not like the fat - I mean flat 6 in front of my feet and the riding position. BMW and Goldwing riders must like it, but it's not my taste.

Was a Yamaha Venture for me... Great bike, fantastic controls as someone had mentioned. If I could duplicate those radio controls onto my Vision I would be a very happy man. The drivetrain was also damn near bulletproof. Had the same basic layout in my Vmax and it took all the abuse with never a wimper. I would take a hard look at the Venture again if they would update it. Most comfy bike I have ever rode.

AAron, was the dinosaur an eighteen wheeler?

I had the same hallucination once except it was a Greyhound (the dog) and I wasn't eaten just passed at 75mph like I was standing still.

To stay in line with thread topic, I came from Harley.

Didn't buy it because it was a touring bike.  Bought it to support the guts that it took for Victory to build an American bike that was so outrageous and unique.  Just happened to be a full dresser.

I was in South Dakota tooling down the interstate on an Iron Butt run. I hallucinated that a green road sign turned into a dinosaur and jumped out into the road trying to eat me.......I swerved into the other lane and barely avoided being eaten.

....no shit.....I stopped and took a nap right then. I didnt even perceive that I was tired.

I rode a GL1200 and then a GL1500. I sat on a GL1800 and wished there was a more comfortable touring bike that was a V-Twin. Enter the Vision...

Thanks for all the responses so far. I'm a little surprised that the Vision is the first touring bike for so many. That says a lot in favor of the Vision.

More to the point of the poll, just as many Goldwing riders have switched to a Vision as Harley riders, which is the point I was trying to make to my buddy. At this point in time we have 23 former Goldwing vs 24 former HD riders, 11 of which were GL1800 and 13 of which were HD Electra Glide Ultras.

In my experience, there are no more die-hard brand model loyalists than Goldwing riders and Harley riders. The Vision appears to be making inroads into both camps at about the same rate. Those of us who own one know why.

After many years of "making due" with rigged up cruisers and riding with people on Visions, seeing what they could do in the cureves and then spending some seat time in some freinds Visions I had to have one.

Not to mention, I'm a Victory nut as it is and I LOVE that they are AMERICAN made!!!
