Not a very good Idea, bikes are hard enough to see at night, especially from the side. The only way I would take them off is if I were planning on replacing them with yellow and red LEDs for even better visibility to other drivers. Just my 2 cents.

I cut the top of the license plate frame off too. I have plans to replace the ones below the bags with lights, someday.

Better check with your state laws. In Washington State they are required, had a buddy get a ticket last year for not having them on.

I'm having a hard time wondering why you don't want to seen? Going for the invisable look?

THANKS arronrkelly, I'm off to the garage to remove some schit from my ride!

Why is it that some people want to tell others how to lead their lives? I live in FL and I am grateful I don't HAVE to wear a helmet.

If you like reflectors, go for it. But why do you care about my reflectors. I don't ask you about your hair or if you wear reflective clothing when you ride.

As for being seen, if a cager doesn't see an 900 pound bike with lights and a 200 pound man on it, a couple of tiny little refectors are unlikely to make any difference. Hey, I could wear a Fluorescent Yellow Vest too but I don't. Ain't in my repertoire.

Riverdawg, Can't believe not removing reflectors is a state law in Washington or anywhere else for that matter. I'd have to see the Statue on that one. Me thinks someone is jerking your chain.

NOPE! My son adapted a 67 CHEVY C-10 front clip onto his 72 C-10, looked great and gave a different look, made the town clown look and write him up for no front fender 'Nader lights'. Quick trip to Radio Shack and a 3/16th drillbit fixed that-two very teeny (but letter of the law) front fender amber LED Nader lights. It's covered in the RCW's
In Kahleeforniaa they'll give you a warning for having a red reflector on the front half of a vehicle. Had a baseball cap with a red reflective band on it stuck up behind the windshield on another bike, got to chat with a holstein about it, he let me go after I repositioned the cap so the reflective surface wasn't visable. HEN HOUSE ?? YES, generate that revenue!

The federal standard for reflectors reads as such:

"On the rear?1 red on the vertical centerline except that, if two are used on the rear, they shall be symmetrically disposed about the vertical centerline. On each side?1 red as far to the rear as practicable, and 1 amber as far to the front as practicable."

Each state has their own standard, but they are very similar to the federal one.

My new license plate holder does not have a reflector. I know if I get a ticket there is no getting out of it, but I just couldn't stand that ugly tin can Victory used on the Vision. I have not done anything with the side reflectors. I will probably leave them alone since they do not bother me too bad.

Of course if someone backs over the parked bike at night I am sure it will be there fault for not anticipating someone would remove the reflectors.

So where did you get the "federal standard"? Is a standard a law? Could you please give me the reference text or a link to same? I can't tell what you are quoting. I have always pulled all the standard issue reflectors off my bikes as have most of the people I ride with. None of us have ever been ticketed or pulled over and between us we have been in all 50 states. Often the "standards" are for newly manufactuored vehicles and the "standard" does not require the individual owner to maintain those "standards". There is also a law in most states requiring 2 brake lights on the back of your vehicle. If you get stopped/ticketed because your left or right is out, check the law in your state as most states do not specify location of said lights and you prolly have two still working (one side and the center light) Might save you a few bucks.

So please quote a source if you are going to tell me about "standards".

we really go over the top sometimes. if someone wants to yank their reflectors off, so be it. Everyone has to learn for themselves of what works and doesn't work. Of all the myriad of accidents that I've read, I don't think a reflector would have prevented that one.

My second bike got back into and knocked over in a parking lot with nothing else around it in broad daylight on a sunny day in the summer. It had all the standard reflectors and even a fairing, and yet he didn't see it. No, he was it paying attention, and would have hit it even it was one big reflector.

as far as federal standards go ...

I have absolutely no concern what anyone does with a reflector. Just supplying info that someone might find useful under a thread with the subject heading "Reflectors".

It's Standard 108. Happy reading.

Just as a word of caution. The IAV more than likely violates some emissions code.

Wow! That is riveting reading material!
I did find some interesting items though...... It explains why Victory does not install or sell items to cause the trunk to have either turn signal or brake lights. They can not be affixed to an item that is removeable except for repair purposes.

It does specify that a motorcycle must have side facing reflectors. Amber as far forward as practical and red as far rearward as possible.

Another interesting thing I found in there is the headlight lens abrasion and chemical resistance test. I have a hard time believing that my headlight lens meets the abrasion resistance test! (new 0000 steel wool rubbed repeatedly across the lens at 2 PSI.)

Dig in to that CFR (code of Federal Regulations) having dealt with CFR's in aviation, I found them to be an instant cure for insomnia! (works faster than Das Kapital or Mein Kampf) Remember these codes are written BY lawyers and written FOR lawyers so vague is the overriding purpose 'subject to interpretation'
You can go to www.streetglo.net and pick up a reflective decal that fits the circumfrence of you wheel or reflective decorative decals.

I deal with these regulations daily. They certainly are cumbersome to read through. Once you glance through a few of them you start to understand why things are designed the way they are. It took 2 years for us to market a fitting because of the extensive testing FMVSS (Federal Motor Vhehicle Safety Standards) requires. And then many industries require SAE compliance on top of that. SAE is no better reading.

Riverdawg, you couldnt be more Right... there are alot of things we do to our visions that we dont know is illegal in some states, like the reflectors for one. get this, did you know the brake light mod, the one where you cut the wire to add more brake light when the turn signal is on.? that one is illegal is PA. because a brake light must have a min of 4 inches clearance from a turn signal. so victory didnt do what they did by mistake... they did it to obey a law...

I will now quit complaining that Victory didn't use the top box lights for turn signals and brake lights. (Removable)
Good research.

keep in mind, just as in NASCAR, Polaris has a rule keeper that goes over all of that stuff before it rolls out the door. Stuff like the hideous sticker that warns you that motorcycles are dangerous and you should wear protection when riding and the go and stick on your brand new bike's painted surface.

State of WA, not only must you have side reflectors but also the font and rear blinkers must be 2 1/2 inches min. I had some small Kury on my KP that I had to changed out. Why because my neighbor who I ride with is also a State Patrol motorcycle rider. If he states it I do it.
