The wife and I rode 165 round trip today. Mostly 70mph or less. A little stop n go traffic in Georgetown, Frankfort and Louisville. This is Kentucky, so we did have a few hills and such.

With VFCIII, Victory HiPo air filter, Lloyds intake plate and S1L2 pipes, I got 37mpg. I was hoping for a little better than that.

I recall a few of you running similar set ups and reporting two up riding over 40mpg. What are you doing that I'm not?

My 2008 Vision Tour gets around 38 MPG 2-up in mixed riding conditions. We're often fully loaded with luggage.
My 2009 Vision Street generally gets over 40 MPG 2-up in mixed riding conditions.

I recall a few of you running similar set ups and reporting two up riding over 40mpg. What are you doing that I'm not?

First off, don't take anything I say below personally, I know everyone wants to make their bike better than factory.

My 2010 is bone stock and I have no trouble getting between 40 and 44 mpg average either 1 or 2up. Mostly depends on the fuel, road conditions and wind. I don't seem to get any better or worse mileage when it comes to riding speed or city or highway ratio as long as I'm not riding like I'm in a moto gp race. I just ride normal and do nothing special. I have 29k miles and have done nothing but change the oil umpteen times.

My personal opinion is that all the add-on do-dads do nothing for mileage, just torque and horsepower. And to apply basic laws of physics, if you increase torque and horsepower (this of course requires more fuel ) and do nothing to reduce the load on the engine ( like say reduce the weight of the bike or the amount of surface area pushing wind ), the only thing that you are effecting in the equation is you must be burning the fuel far more efficiently or you will most certainly cause your fuel mileage to go down.

Could Victory squeeze out a little more horsepower and torque? Absolutely they could........... at the expense of mileage. Could they bring the mileage up significantly better than the average heavy touring bike? Sure they could........... if you don't mind riding a dog of a bike that runs like a moped. But either scenario would probably cost you significantly more.

I find it hard to understand that folks just live by the notion that manufacturers refuse to design vehicles for the best mileage and performance balance possible for the price, ignoring all the miracle add-ons that are out there on the market. If Victory could make a 900# touring bike that produced 120ft/#'s and 115 HP and still got 50 mpg, don't you think they would??? Even if they did have to add on the $2500 worth of goodies you listed above, wouldn't they do it? Of course they would cause everyone would want one.

Harley fell for this one and came out with the so called "screaming eagle" option. A whole bunch of aftermarket add-ons that supposedly make the bikes unbelievably fast (NOT), and the mileage went down the $h#t whole to boot.

Here's my advice: take the bike to a very competent VTwin tuner that owns a dyno (and knows how to use it) and have them tune the bike for the best mileage and performance balance, (this will cost you another chunk of change) and hope and pray he can get you a net increase. If he can't than you will have to live with the fact that you spent a whole lot of money to "improve" a great bike and will never recoup your "investment".

My guess is that you started out with a great touring bike that had plenty of giddy-up to start with and got around 42mph average. Since then you have made a few parts suppliers a little richer, your bike will be faster and louder forever and your mileage will be lower for just as long. And to boot your awesome stereo is now that much harder to hear.

Good Luck and safe riding friend.

DannyB,
You don't tell us how many miles you have on your Vision.
When my 2011 Vision was new I only got 37 MPG.
Now that it is completely broken in (24,000 miles) I get right at 41 MPG at 2,500-3,000 RPM's.
If you are lugging your motor you will get less MPG.

I qualify as "2 up" by myself.

I get 45 mpg near always. The only engine type mod I have done is the high flow air filter. I have always believed that the Vision has plenty of power and torque. I rarely have to downshift to make a pass.

If you owned a car that could keep up with your VV, it would get 10-15 mpg. Just enjoy the thing ... or buy a 200cc scooter and get 80 mpg. Life's TOO short to worry about that crap. :>}

I don't see any concern in your mileage. if you were getting 30mpg I would be concerned. good mpg on a vision at 70 degrees or lower is around 36 - 38mpg. Over 70 degrees, 38 - 42mpg, and it does depend on how you are packed and how you get into the throttle. Ride if for a while and take note of the normal mpgs for certain conditions. And as Don says "Life's TOO short to worry about that crap. :>}"

Ok. I'm good. Thanks guys. Bike has 5200 miles on it. With riders and junk in trunk and bags, probably 450lbs and it was a windy day.

I knew my MPG would drop a little. The engine is noticeably cooler with the fuel controller. My mpg was figured with a calculator.

I love this bike! And so does the SO!!

We all know that the MPG readout on our Visions is about 3 MPG high.
I have used an EXCEL spreadsheet to keep track of all my fuel consumption and repair/purchases for my Vision.

Is that VFC tuned on the dyno? If not, you could be running rich and this could be your whole problem. Based on your mods, and assuming you have the S1L2 reflash, you might not need the VFCIII at all.

DannyB,
I have almost the same setup, except with Big Honkers instead of the S1L2 pipes. That's about what I get. I did have it dyno tuned by Lloyd, but I recorded the settings and turned the VFC down a point for my trip. I felt no "seat of the pants" difference. I'm not sure how much it affected milage, I was just sick of the soot on the tips.

You may want to reset your MPG counter on every fill up to see if it changes.
You can also watch your instant MPG counter to see where it does best & worst.
Last week we were stuck behind a semi on I-81 in PA, so I crept up behind him to enjoy the benefit of the "draft".
My MPG climbed to over 50 MPG at 75 MPH. lol

I get a good 45 mpg and that filling up the bike right to the neck of the tank and using a calculator to do the math. S1L1 ness top air filter 02 sensors plugged in. I get this if I stay under 70 mph and riding at 80 mph drop down to 42. I have ridden in the back twist's and never above 60 mph and pulled in 53 mpg. Just think some day we will be talking about how many hours we get out of charging the battery.       <br />

No VFC whats so ever. Have nothing but exhaust and top air filter. I read enough post and they said to unplug 02's to help stop the popping so I did it and my gas millage dropped way off and with premium just over 4 dollars a gallon here I plugged them back inn.
Yes I get popping but only on cretin days. I think the humidity has a lot to do with popping. Our ecm is designed to let the bike run at different altitudes so when you unplug the 02's the ecm doesn't know what altitude your at. Not that it does any harm to un plug them.
I wish we had better ecm's

John, I have often wondered how our bikes would run with "proper" map and wideband sensors, instead of narrow band sensors.

I'm running '09 TP with the S1L2...engine is bone stock otherwise. 60% of my driving is two-up and normally I see 42 (based on the bike's calculator) One variable that doesn't appear to have been mentioned is if the gas is ethonol blend or not...here in my part of Montana you can still find non-ethonol gas around and I'll use it whenever possible.

I rode 2 up from Cary, NC to Hamlet, NC and back, ran around town the next day and when I finally filled up I had gone 235.7 miles using 5.257 gallons of gas. Just at 44.8 MPG.

To optimize fuel mileage, set tire pressures to the high side ( 40#), make sure engine oil is not overfilled, and adjust fuel mixture to run lean (via VFC or PCV). The downside is the heat the motor generates from running lean may be uncomfortable and may lead to premature engine wear. I have a stock 09 Vision that I bought new a year ago and get 40MPG +/- 2MPG, and the motor never, ever pops. Evidently, Victory came out with new maps last year that really solved the popping, but most likely at the expense of fuel economy.

I should have mentioned I run 41psi in both tires. I've started backing off the idle/part throttle settings in .5 steps. When find the setting that gives me the lean high motor, I'll add .5 back and leave it there. After all, that was my goal, to lightly enrich the mixture to cool that super lean hot engine.

I GREATLY appreciate all the responses!!!

On a side note, S1L2 pipes had no effect on stereo volume while crusing the interstates at 70 to 80 mph. Goldwingers have no problem with my exhaust when riding behind me.

I've said this before on other threads, and I don't understand why people don't get this basic concept. YOu can have HP/TORQUE or you can have MPG. It's a simple choice. Why people keep expecting more HP/TORQUE and MORE MPG is beyond me. No one, I repeat NO ONE in the combustion engine field has been able to achieve increased HP/TORQUE AND increased MPG.

I have minor performance add on's. I like them. And I expected lower MPG. And I would NOT go back to stock just to get a few more M

So please, please, stop this incessant whining about performance add on's and a drop in MPG. It's called physics people. And until someone can make fusion work it ain't gonna change!

With my flux capacitor plugged in I arrive at my destination before I left. My mileage is great, but the downside is the tank overflows all the time.
