I have a "top filter" installed. Do I need to check or replace factory filter if its moderately dirty?

With the Top Filter the stock front filter becomes more of a secondary filter. Still a good idea to keep it clean but shouldn't need cleaning as often as it would if it were your only filter.

if you have a performance top filter i would get a performance front air filter as well. then both will be washable.. the stock air filter is not washing able. only replaceable

I've found this to be true. The stock front filter does still get dirty, but it lasts a long time--probably three times longer when you're also running the top filter. I just changed my stock front filter with 30,000 miles on it and it wasn't super dirty. I couldn't tell any difference in performance.

If your in a area that has a lot of dust stay with stock. The knock off K&N doesn't filter dust and dirt close to what stock does. You can buy five stock filter before you get to the same price as the K&N

I thought the factory filter was a permanent filter.

Yep. I run the stock paper filter.

I've been around a lot of heavy equipment and farm equipment, all of which operates in dusty conditions. ALL of it uses paper filters and not those oiled foam "performance filters". If it is going to be run in real dusty conditions, they use a dual paper filter, an inner and larger outer one.

Those oiled foam "performance filters" don't really do a lot of actual filtering until they get good and dirty first................
