50,000 miles and I know by the book it's over do but she's in decent shape but has started the stretch squeal that belts get. Don't want to have her break on the way to Sturgis and have wait for her to get fixed by a dealer I don't know.
I got a quick quote yesterday, 6.2 hours (about $500) plus belt. Dang I thought only HD took that long. I understand a Tourer should cost more just wondering.
Anyone else remember the "old" Victorys that you could change the belt on the side of the road in 40 minutes? Yeah, I know things change but I wish it was for the better.

6 hours to remove the exhaust; so you can swap out the belt? Just as we had with the recent brake/clutch fluid thread... does that come with KY jelly too?

Go buy the belt; get some penetrating oil for the exhaust flange nuts; and do it yourself.

No wonder why dealers are called stealer's.....

6.2 hours? I could remove the rear wheel, change the tire and change the belt faster than that. That's ridiculous.

New Vision belts go for +/- $300. I do my belt changes during rear tire replacements so I won't be thinking about replacing my Vision's belt until I wear out my Avon Cobra that should take me to around 40,000 miles. You can always sell your used one on Ebay like these jokers for a couple of hundred bucks to offset the cost

If your current belt is in good condition (and you just want to change it for piece of mind), I'd sell it on eBay. I doubt I'd charge $225 but I can see charging $50 or so. I'd probably buy a used belt in good condition for that price if I was taking a long trip and wanted a spare (again, for piece of mind).

Keep the old belt for a spare.

Have you looked on youtube or google to see if there is a video on how to install the belt? 6 hours does seem like a lot.

That vid is for an '04 Kingpin but I'll bet the process is very similar. According to the video, it takes just under 4 minutes with the rear tire already removed. Six hours is obviously WAY too long.

I would check the edges of the belt like the book shows. If that look good I would a line belt and go to 80 thousand then replace it.
How much up an down play do you have in belt now? If its in specks then you have no streching going on.
By the way there going to tell you that you need a pulley so add another $300 bucks on to your $500
Have dealer order belt and put on the shelf for the day you do the job.
Just never kink the belt all ways keep it with big loops and don't hang it on a nail. Where ever you kink the belt it will break there and never coil it up.
I'm thinking if you un do the flange nuts and un did the cross over support and pulled the tire you could un do sprocket cover. Slide belt in swing arm pull exhaust out enough to bet belt on front pulley your on your way.
Keep in mind after 500 miles you'll half to readjust the belt cause it will stretch a 1/8"

If you do have dealer do the job get him to do the readjust for free after the 500 miles.
I know guys that have over 80 thousand miles on there belts and there going down the road just fine.
Heck if you lived close I would do the job for $400

Belt squeal can likely be caused from your belt being too tight. I believe it should have AT LEAST 32mm of free play... much more than the steel framed bikes.

Also, belt replacement on the Vision does NOT require exhaust removal... not sure why a dealer is telling you that it does. The rear axle and wheel can be removed by simply removing the shock link bolts which allow the swing arm to drop enough to get the axle out. That's it, just an extra 2 minutes above and beyond the bikes of old. Entire removal can be done in less than 15 minutes.

I bought a belt 2 years ago and finally decided to change it out @ 90,000 miles 3 times the span recommended! Old belt not in bad shape. your results may vary.

OK for a 2008 here is the real world experience. One would think that removal of the exhaust is not needed but in fact to get the primary cover off or backed away far enough the rear head pipe needs to be removed and the collector needs to be moved out a bit to allow this to happen. So unless you want to kink the belt in a manner that may damage it then exhaust removal is needed.

I tried to do it with out and ultimately had to drop the tail pipes and rear head pipe. I wish I found an easier way but no. Oh yeah you need to remove the tip over too. To get the screws off the hold the pipes on the rear you need to remove the lower side panels too.

Time is money, I had the time and no money.

An 04 KP, and a vision are so different in build. There is no way to compare the two jobs
We charge 1.75 for the KP, and 3.0 For a vision

Kevin, I can understand 3 hours. I'm sure that's what Victory recommends or close to it. It sounds as though the other dealer is taking Victorys recommended or warranty time and doubling it.

Ok. I understand that what a shop charges and what it actually takes are sometimes 2 different things. (I also understand that it probably averages out over time.) How long does it actually take to change the belt on a Vision (for someone who knows what they're doing)?

I've looked at the manual and I would agree with Kevin's assessment/quote of 3 hours.

Thanks. FWIW, I wasn't suggesting anyone was trying to scam customers on the times. I get quoted "book rates" all the time and some times, the job gets done much faster. The last shop I talked to said that accounts for the vehicles where the nuts are rusted, corrosion keeps parts from moving or someones buddy "fixed" the problem, making it worse.

Thanks all.
It's not the "normal" squeal. That can be fixed with Oil of O'Lay soap every 3,000 miles.
It sounds more like a stretch squeal if I were to guess.
I had the rear pulley replaced a couple of years ago because there was cracking in 3 of the spokes. O.o The extended warranty covered it. Not sure if that had anything to do with the belt. Did not replace cause it appeared in good shape.
They are a new shop in the area. So I was checking them out. the guy did not check a book but said the last one they did took that long. New mech, different bike than he was used to?

You're going to spend a few long hours replacing the belt and you do have to pull the exhaust. Yep, it's time to get the lloydz exhaust gaskets too!! If you're in doubt of the life expectancy of the belt I would change it, well, maybe not me at 50,000 miles. I believe the belt will last well over a 100,000 miles when properly adjusted. My pulley had worn, I had a newer belt that took up the wear on the pulley, the lugs were thinning and I was still hitting it hard. One day, that faggy belt guard thingy broke lose, got between the belt and the pulley and the belt jumped while going down I-95. I got it to the side of the road, sized up the situation and put the belt back on and got it home. It had bent the pulley edge over, but the belt never broke. That belt had at least 50,000 miles on it. I replaced the pulley and a new belt, but I also ended up with that chirping/whirling noise. I've loosen the belt enough that it doesn't see to do it any more, but I play the radio loud just in case. People want to know if I have an old VW engine in there the way it sounds.

But, don't be afraid of the belt, or afraid of changing it yourself. Sometimes you need a little one on one time with the machine.

AH - you're like me, Chris ! Can't stay away from it .... in spite of the insults we 'give' and 'get' !!!

My skin gets thicker as I age - and I either 'ignore' or 'forgive' my detractors. Hell, sometimes I even change my opinion ... HORROR !
