New Bohemia, VA | here in Ga and I've got continual tick, at least until it gets hot. Just changed the oil and the level is good. It sounds like the same tick at start up and then quits fairly quick, now it is doing it until the motor is hot. Any thoughts, snide remarks, or suggestions.

mansfield, MA United States | This is going to sound way out there but I had a ticking sound that really drove me nuts. It would go away when the bike was lifted off the kickstand. They changed my kickstand and the sound went away. I still have a bad sound but it?s not a ticking sound. Try and pick the bike up off the kickstand and see if it goes away. If the kickstand gets bent and the bike leans over to much it will tick. Or is it ticking when your up and riding? |

New Bohemia, VA | mysteriously it quit ticking when I came for lunch. It stated last night in Lumberton,NC when I stopped & ate. Everytime after that it ticked util it got back to the hot point. Now at lunch it is back to normal. I'm going to check into that stuuf Arky, but I'll probably just give 'er a sip of mmo this evening. |

LaPorte,Tx. | Mine was doing simliar, but only if it sat over night. Started doing it when I went to PA last October, would stop when warmed up. I changed oil when I got home, dropped down to 10w40 from 20w50. Did not seem to change anything, still have the 10w40 in it. There was some posting here (FastFred) (kickstand?) on his tick, so from that, I started the bike in the upright, no tick, what gives with that? Now after a couple of month, there is no tick. So I don't have a clue, so I'm riding.

Now that is far from the end of my problems. I have another problem they have tried to find with no success that sounds like a whining sound! They have pulled the engine a couple times and split the case but have not been able to fix it. It is starting to get worse and something is bound to happen soon but they tell me its normal and I just have a loud bike! OK! 19k miles before it got loud! But that?s for another board. |

I buy MMO by the gallon. Use it in my gas all the time. Add it to my auto and small engine oil. But... adding MMO to your motorcycle oil with a wet clutch might cause your clutch to slip, account of the friction modifiers. Just my opinion...you probably will be alright if you add only a small amount.
On MMO's website, "Can I use Marvel Mystery Oil® in my motorcycle?
Yes, add MMO in the ratios recommended in the fuel and oil section above". They don't say what kind of motorcycles. On the MMO forum , Normally, we do not recommend using Marvel Mystery Oil in wet clutch since it could affect the friction properties of the clutch. However, you may want to check on line of a Yamaha chat site and see if other owners have used Marvel Mystery Oil and what there results were.

Pittsburgh, PA | believe me im not trying to make this a oil thread. (omg no way) but what kind of oil have you been using? brand etc. I was just wondering why the lifter stuck in the first place and needed another product to Unstick it?. See what im trying to get at? just a thought. |

New Bohemia, VA | a) AMSOIL b) I haven't put in anything, it quit ticking on it's own.
when it did start it was on a backward incline and I started on it on the kick.
also I've got 61,400 on the clock with this being the first to occur. Bike does not use oil between changes.

I'm no expert, but I would be inclined to suspect the whine to be one of the cam chains interacting with it's tensioner. May well be one of the tensioners are on the high side of spec. (low side of spec would be more like marbles) |

Tucson, AZ | The lifters on these things are tiny, in comparison to the other american motor companies...I was shocked, but have never owned an overhead cam motorcycle, so it doesnt take much to plug a lifters port. Had the same problems, ran a few oz's MMO for about 4 oil changes and problem solved. If I hear it again, more MMO til it clears....
