For most of my 60 mile commute today it was 38 to 40 degrees with that wet white stuff falling. That really wet stuff that goes splat on your visor. The weather was crap, but the Vision was a dream. I don't know about your bikes but mine just loves that temperature range. The motor just hums a tune at 75mph.

I always love the look of other mototerists when riding in weather like that. I realy love the spring time when I ride by the lakes in Minnisota and wave at ice fishermen.

I love the cold weather, but does everyone else's MPG's go way down like mine? i go from 43 ish (47 on dash) at 90+ degrees to about 36 ish in 30 degrees. just curious

yes jeff, at least mine does. I got my Vision 3 years ago next month and while the Florida boys were boasting that their new Vision was get 42-48 mpg, I scarcely getting 36mpg. Surely something must be wrong, but in December that year I rode to Orlanda to see cousin Mickey and got up in the 40's mpg until I returned back to Va on the chilly and cloudy night.

Well my MPG averages around 40. I dont understand why the cold would reduce mileage, seems odd??? On a good note, like Glighto11, my Vision seems to run better in colder temps.. Who knows, whatever, I just ride it regardless!!!!!

When they start adding additives to "winterize" the gas you will notice another drop in mpg.

I changed out the oil for the winter and drained the 20w50 Mobil 1 to put in 5w40Rotella and rode the bike 10 miles in middle 50's temp. The oil was barely warm even thought the cylinders were hot. Thatas you source for low milage in the cold.

VR - Out of curiosity, when in Fl with them boys get'in the good milage, did you happen to notice their pipes? Did they look like mine, like the pipes of a D9 Caterpillar?
Not hard to understand why the mileage is crap when most of the fuel is coming out the stack unburned.

G - I never saw nary a florida boy the whole time, I just conversed with them on the VMC and here. They are heavy on theVMC.com and if think I've rack up the posts, they make me look silent in comparison. KevinX is one of the Florida boys but he ain't got the Vision, yet, but I know he takes good care of them. I think most of them have gone S1L1 or 2 as far as I know.

Are you letting your bike warm up during the cold winter months before driving off? Is the computer telling the motor that it's cold out and it needs higher RPM for a longer period at start up? Like stated above winter gas mix means lower MPG. Are you running a lower gear because of the mix of snow, slush and wet road?

Not sure who your post is directed toward RR, but overall gas mileage drops by idling longer, add to that the ambient tempature is dropping to 40 degrees and lower, mine drops even more. My best gas mileage is when the temp is above 70 degrees, and the worst is when it is below 30. Riding slower always increases the mileage even riding in a lower gear, at least mine does.

My bike is still new to me. It there a thermostatic switch on the oil cooler or is it sending oil through it all the time? If there is no switch, does anyone know of a good cover for that oil cooler? I need to get a oil cap temp thermometer for my bike.

The oil cooler only cools the oil flow to the head - Covering the cooler would probably not be a good idea. These bikes are not like harley engines where the oil to the entire engine flows through the cooler.

Thank you, that is very good to know. There was another board that had alot of talk about the restricted air flow over the cooler on hot days. Is there a diagram of the cooling circuit? Is it a small "passage" or does the oil reach enough to effectively cool? Has anyone used a cooler cover during the winter and monitored oil temp to evaluate the impact?

I think I'll go with some 5w-40 oil for the winter.

Where does one access the Vision Service Manual pdf?

All the tech and service info you want at your fingertips.

The cooling diagram on 4.4 shows that the oil passes through the oil cooler on its way to the heads (exhaust valve) bridge, over the cam chains and sprockets and back to the sump.

Its called thermodynamic efficiency. When an engine is cold the compression is less adiabatic, meaning your loosing more heat in the combustion stroke, lost heat means that heat has to be made up eventually, in an engines case, you lose more heat to heating the engine and less chemical energy being converted to mechanical energy in the form of turning the rear wheel.

Diesel are a good example of this, only part of diesel extra efficiency comes from the higher energy content fuel, the rest comes from the high compression ratio, higher compression, more heat, higher efficiency.
