Midlothian, Va. | Fell off while in Ga. for the rally. Recovered the deflector and one screw. Can this screw be found locally or is it a dealer item? Also is this common and is locite the cure?

Mt. Vernon, WASH. | Take the recovered one for show and tell @ the hardware store with you but I seriously doubt its something exotic. And LOCKTITE is your friend! I keep and eyedrops sized bottle of blue in the tool pouch on the bike. |

New Bohemia, Va | Those are self-threading very course threads. You might be able to replace them close with just about anything. But try pleasants as they might should have them. Personally, I took my uppers off so you if you're buying lunch today, you can have what you need, I've got the fins off, but the screws on the bike.
as far as loctite, I don't use it too often as the only loose nut on my bike is the one behind the tassles...

DO NOT use lock tight. Lock tight makes heat and that could crack the deflector.
I know harley riders who would use lock tight on there taillight screws and it would crack the screw hole.

New Bohemia, Va | no worries here. The only time I've used loctite on my bike was on the...something on 'nother that I was told I should use loctite on. Oh yeah, it was that big disk the caliper squeezes that mounts to the rear wheel on the oppiside of the big belt wheel. You all know what I'm talking about. I definitely don't use loctite around plastic, wood glue works better. |

Vernon, WASH. | I guess I should have been a bit more specific, I meant a very very teeny drop like just touching the tip of the screw in the fluid and letting the screw tip draw up some without dunking the fastener. Capillary action will draw a thin coating onto the screw or bolt and turning the fastener as you install it will spread the fluid evenly in a micro coat.
I in no way meant you to think that you should apply it with a garden sprayer or paint brush! It does create heat but a micro thin coat shouldn't cause any issues particularly if you let it 'gas off' a bit and wait till it's tacky before installing the fastener, it's meant to keep the fastener snug as installed not super glued in place.
People don't understand just how little lube or other fluids are needed to acomplish a task. Anti Sieze is a good example a very small amount (like the amount on the tip of a toothpick dabbed onto the tip threads) on one side of a thread is plenty for just about any fastener, apply too much and it's worse than spilling molasses. |

New Bohemia, Va | funny that you mentioned anti-seized which I used on my front caliper bolts and I used just a dab it was everywhere before I knew it. I just rubbed the first bolt on the other 3 then just smeared it around with my fingers.
But, I've never had problems with screws in plastic unless the plastic was stipped. I just used a little wood glue or silicone and it seems to hold. I'd make a mess with the loctite so I just leave that to the pros. Thanks for the tip. |

Gettysburg, 2008 Tour Premium | I just installed CycleOps upper and lower deflectors, and used blue locktite on the lower screws but do not use locktite on plastic. Instead go the the hardware store and get some teflon tape in the plumbing dept. It is very very thin. I use it all the time, even on drain plug bolts. It holds those loose fitting course thread screws very well. Just wrap a few turns on the threads and pull tight to break off.
