Sorry for the long post, I cannot figure this one out and no one else can seem to find the issue.

I have an 08 Vision with S1L1 and a Lloyds IAV installed to control the ever present popping we all love so much. The bike has run like a top for 16,000 miles until last fall. I was accelerating from a stop, the bike sounded strange and then backfired through the intake, stumbled and then ran on to the next stop fine. When I took off it again backfired through the intake than ran good all the way home at highway speed. This goes on for the next couple of months and is a nuisance but was not a big issue. I changed plugs, ran some seafoam through it, checked for exhaust leaks, readjusted the IAV, checked the intake for a leak, checked and cleaned the battery connections and a general once over of everything I could think of. Fast forward to spring and the weather is getting hot out and the bike is now running like pure shit, getting worse with temp. Take it to the dealer and they find a ECM recall that they over looked, complete that and do a once over on the bike.

Get the bike back and it is much better but still not right. When it idles it is rough and almost sounds like it has a mis, almost like it is struggling to idle but us is right at 1k RPM. On occasion it will backfire through the intake but on some mornings it runs like it's new. I take it back and the dealer runs through the bike, checks, intake, exhaust, fuel pump, remapped, plug wires, and so on. They also did a full injector cleaning where you run the bike on a cleaning system. I get the bake back and it runs really good, good deal. I start it the next morning and it will barely idle, the dealer adjusted the IAV almost closed which eliminated what sounded like a mis at idle and it did not backfire through the intake, or at least that is what I thought.

Yesterday we did about 250 miles, the bike runs good until it gets into the 90's and then it starts idling like crap again and on occasion a very slight pop through the intake. I can tell it is just not right. Last night I adjusted the IAV correctly and the mis returns and I get a backfire through the intake.

Kevin or someone have any ideas? I think the IAV adjustment is a clue but I am at a loss....

Possible loose or dirty connection at the ECM?

Checked that. Unless the connector is bad it appears to be nice and secure. Also was clean when checked.

I would think coil. Lots of times as the heat of the day gets higher they will start to go away.
You might be able to recreate the problem with a hair dryer. Pull the wedge and start the bike and then turn the hair dryer on the coil it might take a few minuets before acting up. Could even be the electrical wire going to the coil is shorted or maybe dirt or water in connection.
Maybe crank position sensor.
Or maybe you have a "old" battery that is going bad. If you have a meter maybe this will help.

I like what John frey posted. As temps increase, resistance increases. Electricity takes shortest path to ground. This could be a small crack in a plug wire and/or coil...
Can of freeze spray is pretty inexpensive way to check this out. When bike is cutting out spray on coil, plug wires... to see if it stops cutting out.
Also run bike at night in dark garage, darker the better. Look for any "spark jumping". Using a fine water mist from a spray bottle can some times help to see if this is happening.
Just a thought, not sure if it helps.

The coil is a thought I have had this in the back of my mind for a while. The battery is also a thought, I might swap the batteries between the cross and the vision to see what happens. The effects the IAV has on the symptoms as me doubting these will help but what the hell.

I also got a suggestion to try the MAP sensor. Apparently it can cause these symptoms.

VRat,
Your not far from Lloyd so he would be your best bet. It sounds like you are describing is a lean condition that the IAV alters the condition; click on Lloyds tect tips on the home page he describes 2 conditions that could cause this. The intake manifold/ boot was a problem on my 08 KPT and we found it as he describes.
Good luck,
Jim

I was in the auto repair business for 30 years at a new car dealer. We had a vehicle do the same things you are describing. We found an intermittent short in the wiring harness. And the hotter it was the worse it was.

You stated that you checked the intake for leaks, did you check the exhaust for leaks. I have heard of a couple instances of hairline cracks at the bend right out of the jug. This will create the symptoms you describe.

That's what I was thinking. Plug wire or coil problem.

Exhaust checked, wires swapped, coil checked.

Advise from Kevin they are looking at vacume elbows where the IAC hoses go into the sides of the throttle body and the rubber hoses to the IAV. I understand the Lloyds changed the materials used to install the IAV. I guess there were some issues with the original hoses sent with the installation kit.

Start the bike up and spray WD40 or carb cleaner up around the throttle body and listen for idle to pick up if it does you have a air leak some place.
Rule of thumb is always go back to where you last work on.
