Looks like there are two versions offered one by Witchdoctor and one by HMD. Besides the $50.00 difference in price is there anything better with either one. My big question is do the skid plate have to be removed to change the oil? I am ready to put one of these on my bike just looking for some advise from others that have installed a skid plate.

Witchdoctors is billet aluminum and HMD's is steel. Both are powder coated. and Yes you can change oil with it installed.

Im in the process of installing the Slam kit of hmd520 and the plate they make is stout steel approx. 1/4 thick. Covers front and goes to the rear of the engine case and there is all kinds of space to get to the oil filter no problem.

I'm pretty sure WDs version isn't "billet" aluminum. It's a sheet of aluminum cut and bent to shape. Not that there's necessarily anything wrong with that but I'd hate for someone to think it was machined out of a solid chunk of aluminum.

I went with the WD version and so far I'm pretty happy. I did notice that when jacking, the plate gives at least a half inch, but seemed to bounce back okay.

Victory Police Motorcycles also makes one for the police bikes. $250, but it covers the rectifier as well. HMD's does not.

The one for the cop bikes probably only fits the X bikes as they don't sell Vision cop bikes anymore.

Same mounting points as the HMD one.

That's odd. You're right, though. It IS the same as HMDs version BUT different from WDs version. (The HMD version has both rear tabs on the sides. The WDs version has one rear tab on the side and the other rear tab on the back. I wonder if this could be the cracking issue?) Anyway, I remember seeing WDs version but I don't think I ever looked closely at HMDs version. Figured they were the same (except for material).

What one has had a cracking issue? I have the HMD one. It is very solid and I have never had any issues. If I was to buy one again, however, I would buy the VPM model. I have several bent fins on my rectifier, I think from hitting speed bumps on a lowered bike. A little rectifier protection would have been nice. The mounting is much easier with the VPM and HMD style.

I installed the HMD skid plate installed that came with their lowering kit. It's very solid far as I can tell.

Not HMDs, but I think 3 of WDs cracked at the rear tab. Probably a very small percentage based on what he's sold. I've done business with both HMD and WD and I'd do business with either of them again, in a New York minute.

would the ones that cover the rectifier decrease its cooling efficiency?
