What I am looking for is a look inside . Like if someone had cut it lengthwise in half or similiar.

I'm curious if anyone ever "drilled" a 1/2" hole through the stock muffler baffle? What affects resulted? A little deeper sound?

I was thinking tonight to punch my old mufflers before I change them out just to see what happens. Someone here said they shoved a 1/2" steel pipe up the exhaust making it a straight pipe but I've not heard any more on it. I just so happen to have the drill bit already as I had it for another reason, but it should work to drill them out. When I do pull mine I'm going to do a cut away, there are however some pictures already here on the site, you might find them in a search.

I was just wondering about it...... been trying to score some stock mufflers from the dealer from those that buy the upgrade. Just to mess around, but so far, ....no luck. So I have some 18" drill bits 1/4", 5/16", and 1/2".......... in fact last nite I got them out, but didn't follow thru.......hmmmm just curious though. Interesting though Chris that you've had similar ideas...... by the way I still have to figure out how to post my trip photos of this year. I still chuckle about just how close we were in the Nevada area!!! Congratz on the OCTO miler!!!!

what got me thinking is that I believe my header gaskets are leaking again and I've got some pop and other strange happenings. The right muffler I think is pretty well done, it's not making a lot of noise but there is some holes. I thought about poping them out tonight and then thought not until I get the other ones. If you want a set, seek out someone close to you that has upgraded, I think one guy close still has his but I've not talked to him in a while. I need to move very, very soon though.

I thought that was cool too. I wanted to go up to Fort Drum before the cold set in so I might get by NWJ before too long. Just don't know, work has me wiggin' and I don't wig about work.

Hello,

I first drilled a 1/2 inch hole, then a 1 inch hole in each of my stock mufflers after reading of another rider doing it. The motor "rev'ed" more freely, the DB's increased only slightly, and I had a little more 'rumble" to the exhaust note under acceleration (at least to my ears). At cruise it sounded the same to me as before.

You'll need at least a 18 inch drill extension to reach the flat plate that needs to be drilled through. Shine a flashlight up the rear of your stock pipe and you will see what I'm describing.

regards,

Hey if you are going to be in the area,...just let me know when and I'll try to make the "rendevous", some good roads in the area and Fall is a good time no bugs or humidity.

I was toying with the idea of some glass packs, as I did a quick measurement aprox 30/32 inches in length. About the same dia so the chrome shields could still be utilized, etc....... like I said, just trying to experiment as some of that stuff is VERY Pricey in the aftermarket and from Polaris.

I posted some pics here a while back of what the inside of the pipes look like. Do a search for home-made pipes and you will find them. I am very pleased with the sound and performance of the pipes. Shortly after modifying the pipes I had Kevinx install the cams and dyno-tune. He said the pipes "work". Inexpensive way to get new pipes

I did this on my old Suzuki CT50 and it sounded great! I have heard on other sights that it could cause less horsepower . . . if that was the case, I never did feel the difference, but I did get a deeper rumble. Not tried it on my Vision.

Hoss Did the search . That is what I was looking for. The gas route looks to go through the three tubes ,reverses forward through holes in the back plate , reverses direction again to go down though the exit baffle. So the drilled hole made in the above comments would be in the front plate that holds the first three tubes. Is this correct?

What where the numbers pulled on kevins dyno?

Thanks all for the comments.

106.9 HP and 110.5 ft/lbs torque. Mine is an '08. I left about 2 inches of the baffle connected to the rear cone, but removed the packing inside the baffle tube. It was a fairly easy mod as long as you have a mig welder and a porta-band. I called kevin before I did it because I was afraid of not enough back pressure. He stated that if there wasn't enough back pressure, the low end torque would suffer. After the dyno run, he said the pipes work great, had good numbers throughout the rpm range.
