milwaukee wisconsin | just finished up doing some free simple mods and a couple hundred mile shake down and the bike ran like a cat with its tail on fire better throttle responce more power a deep deep rumble sounds like a big block chevy very simple just pulled out the rubber restricter behind the air filter then i removed my mufflers cut the ends off and i had my old stage 2 pipes from my 04 kp removed them cut them down to 6 in put them in my stock vv pipes welded them in done but you will need to get 4 in id crome tips to put on !! |

New Mexico | Well, I took mine out, but now having second thoughts. Below is a pic. Seems like a pretty engineered part to not be 'essential'. Anyone think it will hurt/help?

milwaukee wisconsin | the only thing this does is is restrict air flow and 2 quite down the air flow coming in to the intake you will notice when you get on the throttle it will be louder thats it !! |

I was thinking the same two things. I have S1L2 pipes w/baffles removed, so wanted more airflow anyway.
I don't really notice any difference in noise.

I wasn't sure, but not really shaped to be very efficient if that is the purpose. Perhaps it calms and controls the chaotic airflow, causing more direct & even airflow to the intake. I know air flowing in a ventilation duct becomes turbulent, and will read different pressures based on where the readings are taken.
I can't really tell if it is better because I changed the oil at the same time, and that always seems to make it run better

Pittsburgh, PA | im guessing there is a point to it.. i cant see them wanting to put more parts on a bike that is not needed? or would they? i remember years ago reading about how carbs Need the venturi effect to pull the air at a higher rate of speed to force more air into the combustion area to match the increase or need for more fuel.. believe me im NO expert! i just tried to understand what i read many years ago.. |

scotts valley, California | If you want more intake, put the "rubber restrictor" back in and replace the cover plate on the back intake port with another filter. This will about double the area of intake.

New Mexico | Hmmm, where exactly is the back intake port cover plate? Do you have a pic?
BTW - I removed the trunk and changed the oil at the same time I removed the air restrictor so not sure what exactly helped, but my mpg is up about 8%.

scotts valley, California | No pix. When Kevinx cammed my bike, he did the modification on the back intake port. If memory serves me correctly, it is about under the radio controls, accessible from the top. There are many on this forum who know a lot more about this than I. ?Arlen Ness sells a kit for this that they say doubles the air flow. ? |

Pittsburgh, PA | if you remove the center console (where the radio is) the 2nd plate is right there! 6 bolts hold it in place. then you install the 2nd air filter in that spot.. |

Grand Cane, LA | I would think that the rubber intake insert would help create more pressure through the ports. Pretty much the same as if you would take a 2 inch pipe and reduce it to 1 inch. You would reduce the volume of air passing through the pipe, but the air that did come through would be at a higher pressure. This in turn would help create a vacuum effect outside of the tube and would help pull in more air from the surrounding area. Kind of like force feeding the ports in a way. |

Tucson, AZ | I took mine out this week to see if I could see any difference with performance or mileage. Performance, maybe a little, hard to tell, but on a little 75 mile scoot today, the computer tells me I'm getting 55.4 mpg. The only thing that would concern me is that it maybe it could be running too lean with the additional air flow. I'm going to run it a few more hundred miles and check the plugs to see how they're burning. |

Heading off for a 4k trip soon, so if you find a problem please post. From what I have read too lean can cause serious engine problems.

Tucson, AZ | That is very possible about the computer readout. I've really never checked the mileage against a calculator, but I'm going to put one in my cubby hole and check it for sure. That being said, before I took the boot out the computer was giving me around 48 to 49 mpg. For the record, I've had my VV KevinX'ed, high flow air cleaner, and L2 pipes, and of course Dark Sided. |

Pittsburgh, PA | I wonder if this applies with a straw the same way with removing this piece.. what I mean is try drinking with a normal straw (intake plate) then try drinking with a straw that would be 1 inch wide (no intake plate) |
