Four (fool)hardy souls are going to be making a run to the Grand Canyon, leaving from the Boston area on June 30th. Why the Grand Canyon? One of us has never seen it.

We will be using the SPOT satellite tracking and hope to have a tracking page up in a week or 2. We also hope to blog from the road, though I expect we'll be too tired to type anything . Photos will be uploaded.

The crew (though we'll probably be using the aliases (Bobby, Doug, Woody, Dudley):

Tom "Chopper" (Cross Country)
Jedi Jeff (Vision)
Pete (Vision)
Redrider (Vision)

The route (option 2, with some other alterations, but pretty close):
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=02769&daddr=Flagst...

If you know of any construction or hazards on the route, let us know.

If you see us on the road, flag us down and give us cold beer or water or beer. Did I mention beer?

Jeff, Once you hit St. Louis you'll be following Route 66 pretty close on I-40. I just did that trip from Chicago to LA (in our Mustang - I had reconstructive surgery on my thumb) and the roads were good west of St. Louis. Make sure you take lots of pic. There are several Victory dealerships along the way. Have fun and ride safe.

This is just a possible suggestion of a route west/east. I live in south central PA and did live 75 miles away in the DC suburbs. I went out to visit a riding budd once when he lived in Arkansas once to Phoenix and instead of using using 70 or 40 I took route 64 accross WV, Kentucky and IN. Route 64 can be accessed a few different ways either take 79 south from the PA pike or take 81 from the PA pike to 68 accross western MD to 79 south to 64. I know this might sound just more complicated but what it offers for a few extra miles is fewer trucks and far less congestion and a better ride altogether. On the way west I always stopped at a Super 8 in Mount Vernon, IL because it is across the parking lot to a pretty good Italian restaurant. From Mt Vernon you can jump on 57 and cross the river into St. Louis and take 44 across Arkansas to connect to Oklahoma City and route 40.
The route 64 route for added around 30-40 miles but was so much more pleasant I always make Mt. Vernon, IL (700 miles) in pretty good shape. You avoid many major metro areas going this way.
Have fun but watch out for the drinkers in Missouri, it seems drinking while driving is a way of life there--gas stations sell singles for the road at all hours. I was pretty shocked when I encountered a man popping the top on a tall boy at 7 AM while walking to his car, gives new meaning to "cornflakes-in-a-can."

$44 bucks for a patch? That will fill the tank a couple of times.

Jeff I have a set of Vision bags if you need to use them. I just need them back in Aug for my trip out to Prescott. We are flying into Las Vegas and renting a Vision for the national VMC rally. We will be doing the Grand Canyon the easy way. Wish I had the time to do it the long way! Lol

Thanks for the route suggestions, advice, and offers. We'll keep them in mind.

Fred - Thanks for the offer but I also have a set of Vision bags. You're going to the Gully in style! I'm just hoping the fires don't change our plans.

Hottierod- Don't mind being Bobby but I'm more the persona of Doug. "...Holy Crap it's the Golden Knight!..."

We just got back yesterday from our 9 day blast to the Big Ditch - best riding is the backroads of southern Utah - AMAZING !
We did NORTH RIM of the canyon - avoids all the tourist traffic and the ride in and around is made for motorcycles.

Here I am standing a few inches from a few thousand feet straight down - drop....
