Have any of you had the trunk cable break? The cable just snapped on mine the other day, about 3.5" in. I can't even go to my dealer. They've announced they're closing, and are no longer ordering anything.

Chief, I had mine break some time ago and I went and got the little thin cable from the hardware store and the little cable clamps, looped around the screws at the desire length. Its been working great since then, no issues. I'll try to take pictures tomorrow and post.

I made about 5 extras when mine broke a month ago... a little wire, and little cable rings, and a little solder... done

I replaced mine a few weeks ago. It seems important to align the cable clamps to be straight and no bends in the cable when open. Mine broke right where stressed at the end of the clamp.

Mine broke last year and while I was waiting for the cable from the dealer I made a strap out of 1 inch wide webbing (like on a backpack) from the hardware store, put two small grommets on it and it has worked great. The strap has a little stretch in it in case the wind catches it while open. No problems getting in the way when closing. Never did put the new cable on.

Mine broke also, went to the hardware store with one of the screws, and fitted it into some small chain. 69 cents later I was on the road and its still on there. Beats the hell out of $15.oo for a new cable.

Mike,

Good idea. I have been very careful with the cable ever since I heard about the first one braking. Mine still works but who knows for how long. The chain sounds like a fine idea.

Thanks

I think the added stress with the trunk lid rack makes the stock cable vulernable. With this fix I've done has never given me any concern and I use my trunk all the time.

+1 on breaking. However, I replaced mine with a new stock one and purchased one extra for the toolbox for the next time it breaks,

I just used some 14 guage multi-strand wire and a round electrical connector at each end as a temp. fix, since the connectors are only crimped on. I was thinking about thin cable and clamps, but I really like the webbing idea!

Thanks for all of the great ideas!

Wally

PS: I DON'T have the truck rack. Mine snapped without the extra weight!

Umm, warranty? Call Victory coporate, and ask them to send you a new one...

Yah, me too. I'm a lot more gentile when opening trunk now. My dealer removed one from a showroom model and fixed on-the-spot.

Maybe a nice stainless steel chain from a jewelry store would work nicely also?

When mine snapped I examined it and felt it was less than adequate even without the trunk, way too weak of a construction. I believe I mentioned it then to my now defunct dealer but never thought it was a warranty item but had no plans to try another one to ask. The risk you run is when it snaps you may end up damaging other things, and when your warranty is gone, it's on you baby.

The fix with the sturdier material, though not guarenteed not to break, I never give thought when I open my lid as I did with the original cable. Maybe I just got the Friday one originally.

After almost three years with no extra weight from a trunk rack, the original cable broke. I think I am going with the webbing idea.

I hear this guy's fix is still holding up very well.
