So my dealer is 50 miles away, and the knuckleheads at the three auto parts stores in my town don't carry a semi syn oil, though one did, but not anymore and the other had two quarts of Lucas (!) which also doesn't do squat. So I took another threads suggestion and bought a gallon of Rotella 15-40 (I think, it's been a couple days) in the blue jug. This guy says after two or three years he just loves it. But of course, being a million years old, I got on here today and rediscovered I need another half a quart. My question: Has anyone used conventional oil to make up the half quart? I even have some Joe Gibbs oil with zinc in it, if needed, but I got Mobil 1, and a bunch of plain old Quaker State 10-40 and some 5-30. It's really getting on my nerves that unlike yesteryear, there's so many special oils for all my different rigs. Too many decisions, can't keep'em all straight. Sumtimes i feel like going back to Russia where the only oil I need is Vodka so I can't feel the frostbite when I pass out in the snow! What I'm getting at here, is I've used Vic oil exclusively 'till now, but want to try the Rotella, just don't want to drop another 30 bucks for a half a stinkin' quart, y'know? And I don't want my clutch to slip, either, 'cause I ain't as thin as I once was.

Rotella T5 5w-40 in the blue jug, I mean. And yes, I DID search the thread. Someone used the silver T6 15w40 in the silver jug 50/50 with it as a blend, but I again don't wanna buy a gallon for a half a quart.

i used rotella 5w40 (blue jug) synth in my vision. i needed another 0.5qts so i bought another synth oil which was mobil1 5w40 (1qt container)deisel oil which is also fully synth. No issues and ran great. then since i only used a half qt i now have another half qt free for the next oil change. as my vision doenst use oil between changes. =)

I use the "blue jug". Don't worry about the odd 1/2 quart anymore because now I use it in everything. The Ranger, JD Zero Turn, Toro mower, Pressure washer, utility tractor, and generator. For me it is one size fits all. Had no problems with any oil usage in any of them.

Thanks, AK, I know you're one of the "high milers" around here. I was figuring a half quart wouldn't probably make a whole lot of difference no matter what it was, I suspect lubing is not an issue, just more volume equals more cooling as the weather heats up, although that's not really a serious issue around the Great Northwet. (sic)

I've wondered, is the diesel issue just that there's zinc in it, or is it something else, besides shear qualities that make a "diesel" oil?" I read your link, and it's all about sales, as who wouldn't want these qualities for everything they drive? I think I'm going to take your suggestion and start phasing this stuff in to all my rigs-a few less things to remember, right? Who knows, maybe I'll be able to will my Craftsman lawn tractor to somebody in 2054, when I turn a hundred!

jaso M is what you are looking for. I'm not one to mix oils in my motorcycle unless it is necessary to get to the next oil change, with the Vision that has never happened. Springing for a second jug would have been a great idea if you roll alot and it would save you the thought of getting a gallon and a quart, at least for 8 oil changes. Just my thought on it, but make sure it is JASO M.

You.can purchase that rotella 5w40 in single qts. But if you did add a none jaso-m oil (0.5qts) it wouldn't hurt a thing just as it didn't hurt my vision. With that Mobil oil they didn't get the cert for jaso on that oil as they already have two motorcycle oils.

So I put in the Rotella and fired it up and it seemed remarkably quieter, but of course the rains came and then the work week, and so I haven't had a chance to go anywhere. It's 73 and sunny today, not a cloud in the sky, so tomorrow-er-well, I just heard on the radio the world's coming to an end tomorrow, May 21st, so I guess I won't be able to test the new oil. Sorry. At least I shouldn't have to mow...

(=0>

BTW, a99miata, my old cat did have kidney failure and I had to put her 15 year old soul down last Monday, so I guess you were right.
