Just bought the CB unit and all the accessories that go with it. I would like to know how easy or hard it is to install on a scale of 1 to 10 where 1 would be a blind monkey can install and 10 being you need an electrical engineering degree. This is on a 2010 VV premium.
Thanks for the info.

PS. Is there an how to video anywhere on this one also?

Cheers!

...let the blind monkeys at the dealer do it, I did.

I don't think it is that hard overall, just some plug ins and antenna install if it isn't already as well as the commo plugs. They have to pull the trunk apart and all that good stuff. If you've got the instructions in hand it should take a good half a day I would think.

From what I've read on the board, the harder parts are putting the headset jacks in your panels.

Mines a 2008, but it should be the same installation procedure as your 2010. I did my own. The instructions are pretty clear. I did mine in one day. The hardest part is installing the antenna in the trunk. You have to take the trunk off (4 bolts), then take the outer skin off the base. It's not hard to do, but an extra set of hands will come in very handy if you don't want to drop the thing. Everything else you can do alone. The actual CB unit installs in the well in the base of the trunk, after you've put the trunk back together. It just drops down in there and two screws hold it. Install the bottom screw BEFORE you put the seat filler panel back on. You'll need to unbolt and lift up the radio console to plug in the wiring harness, and you'll need to drill the hole and install the headset jack in the console cover at the same time. If you anticipate installing heated clothing controllers, this would be a very good time to do them too. I did my CB installation, then did my heated controllers at a later date, and I had to repeat many of the same steps. I have my headset jack and a set of dual controllers mounted in my console. I also have a passenger headset, extra accessory power port (ideal for plugging in a battery tender), and dual controllers for the passenger all mounted in the rear. I used two of the dual-mounted controllers from Warm-N-Safe http://www.warmnsafe.com/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=65_71_81 I can tell you how to get a 20% discount from them, if you're interested. The list price of $109.95 will be discounted to $87.96. Their products are great too. It would have been easier if I had done it all at the same time, since I had to repeat many of the same steps for the heat controllers as I did for the CB wiring. My heat controllers are wired into the factory circuits for the optional accessory power ports. No extra wiring or splicing needed, but I should have done it all when I had the bike apart for the CB installation--would have saved a lot of time.

I would recommend that you use a stepped UniBit http://www.irwin.com/tools/drill-bits/high-speed-steel-fractional-h... in a drill press for drilling your holes in your console and rear plastic pieces, and go slow. This tool will make precise clean cuts to dimension. Go slow--plastic and aluminum cut very easily and you don't want to go too big unintentionally.

I would rate the difficulty a 5 on your scale.

Ronnie

Sorry, can't help you on this one as I had my dealer install the unit and I asked them to omit the passenger plug in/volume control and PTT as I ride solo. My wife rides a GL1800 with the CB so it is used for bike to bike communication. I'm sure someone will chime in with an answer to your question.
Cheers!

I just installed my CB Unit myself, but the unit wasn't recognized by the consule, so had to take it to the dealer and have them flash the CB Unit in order to recognize it update the radio and CB software. It now shows up on the consule, but the buttons on the handle bar control won't let me change the channels or squelch. Dealer has never installed a CB unit yet and didn't have a clue. 1000.00 and noone knows what to do. FRUSTRATION! Any advice would be GREATLY appreciated rite now.

I have a 2011 VV and it and the 2010 use the same equipment. At this point it has been a total load of crap and waste of my money. You can't hear anyone talk to you and they can't hear you either. I changed the antenna and it may be better but that is yet to be seen. I hope you don't have the same issues. I even went so far as to look at trading the bike for a HD or possibly a Goldwing or even a Venture. We spend all of this money for the stuff we want and the manufacturer doesn't sell you the stuff that works correctly. I have also been told the headset is not corrected as well. Duh, so far none of it is correct other that ii is a total waste of my money.

The only this I wish is for you to have better luck than I have. Feel some better after this rant and I appologize for that.

Ride Safe.

I installed my CB, jacks, and switches right after I got my Vision in late 2007.  It wasn't too terribly hard. - they came with instructions.  The PTT and Volume Control switches came with the passenger jack and were already wired.  All I had to do was cut the holes and plug the wires into the harness.

Now, the instructions weren't terribly clear, but this was just after the bikes had come onto the market, so they may be clearer now; I don't know.  I have a forum thread on the Vision Tech Reference back in Dec 07 discussing some of the unclear instructions and how I made them work. http://www.vision-riders.com/bb/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=338&posts=3&mid=3375&highlight=&highlightmode=1&action=search#M3375

Good luck!  I think you'll like the setup. My wife and I use the intercom all the time when riding, and I really enjoy having the CB available.

Sorry to hear that you have been having no luck with your CB.  I've had no problems with mine.  Admittedly, the range is less than the one in my pickup truck, but I wouldn't expect it to be, since there is no metal on the bike to use as a ground plane.  It does what I want - transmits and receives about a mile or two.  I do use J&M headsets, though.  They are good quality and they stand behind their products.

I did have a problem at first with being unable to hear or talk. Turned out that the J&M cord I was using was not the right one (this was when the Visions first came out and they didn't know which cord to use with it). Got a new cord and all was well with the world.

Hope you get your CB working.
