Getting ready to mount Atom Bombs.  Couple of quickie questions:

  • Are LH and RH heat shields interchangeable?  They look the same.  Don't want fitment issues once I get on the bike.
  • Any tips / tricks to getting the mufflers themselves onto the headers?  They were damned tight coming off . . .  would use of a lubricant where it fits to the header pipes cause an issue later with sealing?

I just put mine on & I believe the heat shields are different.....look at the rear & you will see the "flare" towards the top.

As far as installing them, I opened mine up using a cone shaped tool & they were pretty easy to slip on. You could use anti-seize or gun grease to lightly coat both & that should help. Of course it will "ooze" once the exhaust gets up to temperature until it's gone....but in no way should that affect sealing. We use gun grease to help the carbon seal build up quicker on new manifolds for heavy diesel engines.

What tips are you planning to use? I gutted my stock tips, thanks to an idea from another member, but still not sure I like the look. I'm thinking of pulling them off, removing the bracket to bolt the stock tips on & getting tips for diesel pick-up exhaust to slip over the end of the entire muffler.

I just spray WD40 in side and out and they seams to help getting on and when you go to take pipes off I do the same spray WD40 on the muffler and twist

You can drill the huck-bolt out, or what I did was just grind the flange down until you could punch it through from the outside.

I'm just not satisfied with the look after I got them on. I'm looking at getting some 4" in / 4" out tips....just gotta find the right ones.
