I have just started to notice what sounds like a squeel or maybe a whinning of sorts that sounds like it's coming from my primary. I noticed this long ago but only when it was cold and it did not last for long, but now it seems like it's always there just louder when it's cold, the engine temp that is not the outside air temp. Any thoughts from anyone?

I don't know what bike you have but 08's had a casting problem with the rear pully. Dealer called Polaris, they replaced it under warranty, no more squeeling.

Mine started with a chip when it was cold that went away. After I had the pulley powder coated it was more of a squeal that went away after riding for about 15 minutes. I had gotten used to it. I started to think that my engine or transmission were making alot of noise. When I finally got the bike on a lift I found that the belt was rubbing on the inside of the pulley in one spot. Made the adjustment. Not only was the chirp/squeal gone, the bike is MUCH quieter. I never realized how much noise the belt was making. What I thought was engine noise was all coming from the belt being out of alignment.

I bought my 08 used with 3100 miles. The guy I bought it from had routine svc done at 2800mi at Baers in PA, also at that time they adjusted the belt for a 'whirring' noise. After a few 100 mi rides I have what I would call a squeal noise from the belt, kind of loud. I asked my local dealer, Zacks in NY about it, he said he never heard of any belt noise problems??????? I've adjusted a few times myself and it's better but not gone. Also, I learned from this site that the 20mm tension spec in my manual is wrong, i guess it should be 32mm, thanks
How can you tell if the pulley is defective???

there have been avery FEW Visions with a bad pulley and I question whether it was bad or just any easy way around proper alignment. Here is what I can say on the topic: The belt tension is NOT as critical as one would be led to believe. What is critical however is alignment. The alignment marks on the Visions swing arm are not cast very exact so you really need to do a visual alignment as you tighten the belt. If you do it correct it won't make noise. There is also a SECOND issue at play. When the rear pulley was coated so were the teeth. This will wear off at about the 12-15k mark and you won't hear a peep after.
So bottom line is you can take the bike to your dealer every 1200-2000 miles and have them adjust it or do it right yourself and then add up some miles. JMO

Have him show you the hole in the belt or you can look for it yourself. I had a stone puncture on my Kingpin belt and it produced no noise. I only found it through my routine belt inspection. I would say it's time to find someone new to work on your Vision.

Yeah there is definitely a known problem with some 08 vision pulleys. You can have it adjusted exactly to spec and aligned perfect with a squeal/chirp. If it is making noise, take it to the dealer, let them adjust it once or twice. If it still does it Victory will replace it if you still have warranty. If the dealer says they haven't heard about it, then they don't work on many bikes. I have replaced 6 of them myself. You guys know if your bikes are having problems, don't let the techs be lazy, put them to work!

My number one problem with Victory is there are no other techs to take it to. I live in s.w. mich. My next closest tech. is Lansing and they sell every bike under the sun but Honda and HD. There is NO doubt in my mind that i will ask to see the belt for $280 and $90 in labor you bet i will. Little things like this just drive me nuts. Thank God and knock on wood i have never had any major issues with either of my Vics.

Yeap it was the rear pully the dealer said, parts on order. Now let's see if it's covered, seeing how my bike was bought 3 weeks before the 5 year warrenty deal. Gonna be a bummer if it isn't. Anyone got any idea how much they are???

the sprocket is 350.91 and an hour of labor. you will probably be ok with no warranty. but don't hold your breath. Victory iss usually pretty good with known problems on out of warranty bikes. If dealer doesn't run it through warranty. just ask them to run it for giggles. It's worth a shot

Ok I have no idea if you are having the same problem as I did. It could be many things. I had a squeal that started after 19k on the bike. I sounded like it was coming from the primary. I hade several dealers look at it and none of them could find out what it was. My main dealer pulled the engine and split the case. Ripped it right down and rebuilt it. When I picked the bike back up the squeal was still there. They ripped it down again! Still nothing. It would get really loud at 1500 rpm?s and droned out my S1L2 pipes! They finely told me to just ride the bike they had done everything they could think of and it still squealed. It was just a noise bike. About a month ago my stator went. Wouldn?t you know it when I picked up the bike it had no more squeal!!! Go figure. I have no problem with the guys that worked on the bike and I know they checked the stator. It was just a PITA !! I have a video of the sound I will post.

if it gets caught between the belt and the pulley, I think it might...

Glad it finally worked out for you FF. I'm grabbing to find the relationship between the primary belt drive and this sound sitting still. What primary are you speaking of, I'm a little slower than most.

The stator is under the primary cover. The sound was coming from the primary area. It was very hard to determine. But as I said it may be a completely different problem. It runs nice and smooth now so I traded it in last week on a 2011 lol
