Greetings folks,

I'm in the process of lining up insurance for the bike, (should have it in a week or so), and I'm getting insurance quotes.

Now while I know that there are many factors that determine the ultimate price, (driving record, deductible, storage, location, etc), with the same coverage I'm getting quotes of anywhere from $1100 to around $500 a year for a Tour Premium.

That is quite a difference.

Just curious, if you are willing to share, what you are finding out there.

Thanks!

$750 a year for my '99 and my Vision when it gets here. Looks like right after hand surgery.
I have Progressive.

Some insurance companies are stupid on quotes but then others don't give the cover you think you are getting. Read the fine print.

Good luck.

Progressive approx - $427 / yr. $500 deductible. They covered my bike that "oops, fell into a wall". I was surprised at the way they handled it. They dealt with the dealer and sent me a check. Very good. They were also recommended by my auto insurance carrier and they may have a contract with them.

I read recently in the ABATE newsletter that some insurance companies have a "no contact" policy. That is, if you swerve to avoid a left turner for instance, and are successful in avoiding striking the vehicle, but go down executing the swerve, you're SOL. This might be something to look into. Anybody have any experience or insight into this?

I hit a big lab cross dog two years ago with my Burgman 650, as it ran across my path at the last second on a country road. The first thing my insurance company asked me is if I swerved to miss him. I said no - I just locked up both brakes and concentrated on keeping the bike straight & upright. Because of the Burgman's very low center of gravity, the bike did stay upright & I sent the dog flying (but didn't kill him).

I asked the agent why the question & she replied that if I had swerved, then they would consider the accident a collision (which would count against me), but because I didn't swerve, it was considered a comprehensive claim (which does not count against my insurance record). In the end the only damage was the front fender which cost me $200 (which the dog's owner refused to pay for - it wasn't worth the hassle of taking them to small claims court).

But I did learn a valuable lesson about not swerving, as I had never heard about that before.

Cheers,
Reg

I can't believe how cheap your insurance rates are in the States. Here in British Columbia we have ICBC (Insurance Corp of BC) which is a government crown corporation (suppose to be non-profit - yeah right!) which is mandatory for at least basic public liability & public damage (pl/bd). Collision & comprehensive can be through a private insurance company (which is usually quite a bit cheaper). My Burgman costs me $1100 a year for full coverage ($1500 if I do all of it thru ICBC), but I've seen places in the States where it's closer to $200 to $300 (probably because they rate it by use & not just by cc"s).

I checked to see what a Vision was going to cost & it ended up being almost $1600 (combo of ICBC & private), which I considered cheap compared to some people I know that are paying well over two to three grand for their Harleys (I guess they get stolen a lot). I'd say you guys have it pretty good.

By the way, to get the good rate with the particular private company that I deal with on my collision & comprehensive, you have to have had your license for at least 10 years and have a clean record. The owners are motorcycle enthusiasts, but their not stupid, they only want to insure the good riders.

No competition & a lot mis-management, is good reason for keeping government out of your life as much as possible - especially in the vehicle insurance business.

Cheers,
Reg

That is a long standing rule. Take in consideration that before they'll pay, you have to directly involved. Swerving to miss a worse turn-out will leave you liable when damage is incured as a result of you swerve. My wife was traveling down I-95 one night when she hit an object in the middle of the road and it puntured the gas tank. The first question of the insurance agent was, "did it fall off a vehicle ahead immediately before striking?" No, it didn't. Sorry, it's her fault because she should have seen it in time and swerve to miss it altogether. In one context it makes sense, because I could run into a ditch and damaged my car on my own and then blamed on some idiot that didn't exist.

While we are on the subject, I have read many things that says if you are on a motorcycle and have an accident, get a laywer first before making any statements to the police. They will look to find the rider at fault. The articles I've read revolve around speed, as an example. Let's say you are traveling down the road, and a car pulls out in front of you on a 35mph road and you make contact, and survive. The police arrive and he is taking statements. He asks how fast would you say you were going, and without thinking you say 45mph. Guess what, you now may be held liable regardless of their stupidity. It's easy to do an internet search and find alot about what a motorcyclist should do in case of an accident. Innocent comments will have you coming away empty handed with a broke bike that will be up to you to fix.
