Sorry if this has been asked before (I am sure it has) but I could not find it in a search. What is the black rubber 4 hole piece behind the air filter for? I assume it does something with the air flow in the air box. What happens if it is removed? Thanks for any help.

I was told it has something to do with smoothing the intake airflow...... sounds like bullshit to me especially if you put one of the intake plates (Lloydz or Ness) on it sorta nullifies the purpose

Maybe it helps with intake noise? Or something like a venturi effect?

we'll guess all day, one of the techs will chime in though. I always understood that it decreased volume, yet increased velosity to direct it toward the intake that's nearly a foot and half away, so yes, similar to the venturi effect. That's my take on the intake subject...

Bike is definitely louder without it.

Don't know exaclty what it is ( I haven't looked ) but all modern intake chambers are made to be as quite as possible ( to quell intake roar) and to let as much air by as required to make target HP. That's why you can hear the unrestricted intakes suck air, An EPA sound test no-no...................

So does this mean you removed it? If so have you noticed any changes other than noise? Milage? Seat of the pants dyno? Drivability?

It is a muffler to decrease sound to EPA compliance. In a S1 bike with no other mods; it will give you a couple HP, but on a bike with an intake plate. It makes no difference

Not to be a dope, just to make sure I understand. With it in you gain a few hp. With it out and a plate it is a wash?
