correct me if im wrong please. being in gear Only helps if you have some place to go? if there is a car in front of you where would u go if your in gear? even if there is Not anyone in front of you, do you just pull out right into the traffic with the green light ? there is "probably" alot less circumstances where being in gear would actually matter in such a way where it would save your life? or am i completely not seeing it?

The MSF doctrine is that you should stop far enough behind the vehicle in front of you, aimed a bit either right or left, so that you can go around that vehicle whichever way presents the most room, dependant on the circumstances. I would think the reasoning is that even if you have to scrape the side of another vehicle, or force a vehicle coming up on your right or left, or oncoming to swerve to avoid you, which would be the natural reaction of a driver paying attention, (Hopefully..), it would be better than being crushed between the vehicle in front of you and the one about to rear-end you.

Most they can give her is 5 years and she could get nothing more than probation, tisk tisk....
Ark you should ALWAYS have a place to go or you are fricken up real bad. Being rear ended is a VERY common occurance for riders stopped at traffic lights. I've jumped curbs and ridden into fields to avoid being rear ended in the past. I never take my eyes off the rear until I have at least two cages stopped behind me.

Pumping the brake lights at stoplights, good idea!

That is something that I do. Especially with the big V brake lights on the VV! The blinking taillights catch a lot of attention.

So how can the cops label this as an 'accident?' Painting your fingernails is a conscious decision....thus this sounds like negligence.

CRIMINAL negligence, as in VEHICULAR MANSLAUGHTER

I agree- manslaughter at the least. Same should apply to those texting, or using cell phones.

When I stop, I usually remember to flash the brake lights at any cars behind me.

You always leave enough room between the vehicle in front of you so that you could attempt to go left or right around him if rear collision is imminenet and safe for you to do so.
I believe its taught this way, I leave almost a car length min in front myself.

This is tough no matter where you are as there is no guarantee of what the person will do behind you. I almost got bit by this one windy day at a light. I was stopped with a car in front and wasnt' even thinking about behind me. I heard some screeching noises but thought was the wind blowing something around and I heard metal contact. I started looking around and finally checked my mirror to see a car behind the car behind me that I didn't know was there shoved into his tailend and half up on the curve. I was just thankful that other car pulled in behind me, otherwise it would have been me.

But for the most part I look behind me and if I'm alone at a light when others are coming up, I'll pump my brakes to make the lights flash and watch to see if they are doing anything to slow down. If safe, I'd be ready to make a hard left or right across lanes to move out their way, but, again, where is the absolute 100% guarentee...?
