Hello,

I just ordered and received the trunk mirror and while reading the installation instructions I noticed that they suggest that if you are going to put on the trunk rack you should do that first. That makes sense as the mirror might break while trying to take it off the mount.

I had been thinking of getting the rack at a later date, but now I'm thinking I should get it before I install the mirror. My question is...is the rack actually worth it? It doesn't come cheap, I noticed. Is it sturdy enough to make it worth the expense and time? Also, would it be better to have the dealer install it? I'm pretty good with a wrench, but drilling into paint makes me a bit skittish, especially in such a high-vis area.

One other thing while I'm shot-gunning questions. Does the trunk mirror get in the way of putting helmets in the trunk? It's much bigger than I thought from the pictures.

Thanks from someone counting down the days until all this snow melts away.

for me, the rack is the best chrome I've bought for the bike.

While definitely overpriced, the rack is well made and very sturdy. I find it to be very useful on trips. Polaris did have a problem with the chrome bubbling up on the early production, so look yours over carefully before installing it. The first one I received had a spot on it that I am sure would have caused problems later. I showed it to my dealer, and he had me a replacement two days later, and even drop shipped it to my house at no cost to me. You do have to remove and disassemble the trunk lid to install the rack, but it's not that difficult. The instructions are pretty clear (must be, since I was able to figure them out). An extra set of hands will be very useful in the process. The mirror will cover the mounting bolts for the rack, so do the rack first.

Thanks, guys. That's what I was looking for. Looks like I'm off to submit another capital expense request with she-who-must-be-obeyed.

I installed the mirror first, figuring I was not going to get the rack, then planned two long trips, and purchased the rack. I was able to remove the mirrow with out breaking it however, I did lose a small part of the reflective material on the mirror. bottom line, the rack is useful and I recommend installing it first, the drilling part is easy as the trunk is marked on the inside from the factory.

On the mirror. I've had the mirror in the trunk from day one. Wife likes it other folks also like to use it at stops. Two helmets in the trunk, no problem with the mirror. Although, a packed trunk, items can rub against it and you will have a small scuff. I'm on my second mirror in two years. Screwed up the first on when I took the trunk lid apart to install extra wires. I tried using double stick velcro on the back of the mirror so I could take it off, but the adhesive on that double stick would not hold the mirror when it was hot outside. Never did put on a trunk...don't like the looks, but I'm sure they work ok.

I would add an extra wire to the left trunk light before installing the mirror. Just in case you want to add the 4710 later.

Oh, good idea, radioteacher. I probably should run wires while I have it apart. Didn't think about that.

Tex and Joe - That's what I was afraid of so I think I'll just go ahead and get the rack and do it all at the same time. Better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it, is my thinking. I'm sure I'd use it eventually anyway.

Thanks for the replies, everyone. Now if I could just get this snow and ice outta here and get the sandy beaches we now call intersections cleaned up...
