Hi-just joined the Vision-Riders. Great site. Good info. Took the plunge from Harley
to Vision('08). First thing is to get rid of the pathetic mufflers. When I removed the right
side muffler, I noticed some type of baffle built into the very end of the headpipe. Is this a
"wisdom tooth" that can be removed or is it an essential piece? Just wondering..
Thanks

I'm no expert, but I've been told that it is a torque cone, and that you will lose low speed torque if you remove it.

What you are seeing is called an "Exhuast Velocity Device" and while removing it will change the sound of the exhaust it will also hurt the overall performance of the bike.

So....yea...ya could say that it is "essential"

Thank you all. No torque=bad. I am not touching the device. Allen

Dont be too quick to toos the stock pipes. They can be made to work very well by just punching out the baffle. I did that and added a Lloyds VFC fuel controler, Performance A/F and the difference is night and day from stock. Not much louder than stock though. I would rather make power than noise any day.

Exactly how and what did you use to punch out the baffle. Did you notice a difference with just your exhaust mod or did you do the whole shebang at once?? "tell me more grasshopper"

I believe what you are describing is the precious metal catalytic honeycomb that is in the headpipe. Yes, it can be removed with some persuasion, but it will make your bike no longer smog legal, that is if your worried about those sort of things. It will also relieve a lot of back pressure and quick heat-up for the O2 sensors that is essential for these engines, so it is really not a good idea.
