When I purchased new, back in June, I updated the exhaust and added the Gatlin Tips. I am noticing now, carbon build up on inside of the tips. Is this normal for those, or is my Vision running rich, and I should check with the Shop?

I've been hearing that we run too low of rpm's when you see this. Check out any discussion on spark plugs.

As far as I know the carbon build up is normal. My bike has it, any other Vision I have seen has it and all my previous bikes had it. I don't feel that it is something to worry about.

I've got the tips as well, with the same buildup, but they're fairly easy to clean.  When they've cooled down enough, I just use some paper towels, windex w/vinegar.  Soot comes right off.  I don't do frequently, but when it gets "unsightly" enough, I'll give 'em a cleaning.

Thanks. I figured cleanup was easy, but worried it was running rich.

Gday,
i have gatlin tips on my 08, when the mechanic fitted them he said i will have a bit of work to keep them clean, as the big twin needs to run rich at low rpms, so what he was saying is it normal with those tips,
They look so good they are worth the effort

I noticed that they get sooted up as well. And even though the tips I made are not the factory ones, they clean up easily. Now, the set I made for my Dad's GL1800 are as clean as can be. No soot! Suprizing enough, I get better mileage than he does, even with mine sooting up.....If you are curious as to what the tips I made look like, check my sig pic-----Metalguy

I use Never Dull to clean mine. It works great and doesn't hurt anything.

Everyday chrome cleaner has worked very well for me the last two years. Granted it does tend to be a pain in the butt to clean but the comments it gets are WELL worth it!!!!!

Never had to clean mine! Gatlin tips are powdercoated wet shiny black and are well sealed against the S1L1 exhaust. No soot no excess unburned gas as Cams, intake plate and fuel controller take care of that!
