| Here I am in beautiful Honolulu, HI with 87 degree weather for business with Anny is home in the garage.  Lots of rental places here but they have HDs, sport bikes or scooters. One place has an old HD springer with the old tractor seat but I am betting it's to get people into the store. I was told the HD shop rents new bikes but there is a piece in the paperwork that if you have an accident and aren't wearing a helmet you loose. Doesn't really matter to me cause I wear most of the time but I HATE someone telling what to do. We will see what I do with 3 days off at the end of the job.
On another life sux subject..... We are rebuilding one of the submarine trainers on the base. What gets me is the Japanese boat docked at the base? 2 miles from the Arizona Memorial. Then when they raise colors in the morning they play our anthem and then the Japanese anthem? But wait there's more. Japanese sailors are training in the building we are working in. Does this sound weird to anyone else? |

Having spent several years in the submarine force I would have to add that it is not unusual. We've been cross-training with Japan, Turkey, Isreal, Greece, Peru etc for years. Of course these are fast attack submarines and not the normally ballistic nuke carrying subs. Ballistic carrying boats are a little more off limits to foreign dignitaries. As far as them playing their national anthem, that's not abnormal either. They routinely played other foreign national anthems after our colors as a curtesy when foreign ships were in port. The funny thing is that we do that for them but not once did any foreign country extend the same curtesy to us... |

Rapid City, SD | I rented a Harley when I was in Hawaii for vacation. It really made me miss my Victory and vow to never own a Harley. I think I would have rather rented a Honda or equivalent. Still to this day I think it I would be most happy by opening a Victory rental shop in Hawaii. There has to be a market there for something different like that. If I can get myself stationed there for the Air Force I will open up a business while I am there.
As far as the Japanese ship. I don't see anything crazy there since we have multiple bases in Japan. We play our anthem everyday on their soil and even though they started WWII we did more damage to them than they did to us. I figure they are a good ali now in a day we need good military neighbors. |

Centennial, CO | Having lived in Hawaii for 5 years, yes, HD is the only thing going out there if you want to ride something that is actually a motorcycle. The cost is reasonable considering the fact that it IS Hawaii and everything there costs 2X or more than the mainland.
BigWill and Goalie are correct. I actually worked and lived on Subase for 2.5 years. The dive tower still there? It was cool to be watching a movie in the barracks (the U shaped one with a pool in the middle) and my door open. The old WWII movie showed a shot of Subase and the dive tower. I looked out and realized that the shot must have been made darn close to where I was at the time. Way cool! Weird at the same time to see it in black and white.
I am not sure if Canada passes the courtesy back, but I do know as BigWill said, no other countries extend the courtesy. We never complain because to me, its similar to what my grandmother would always say. If you do it and its a good thing to do but they won't reply in kind, they are the lesser person (er...country?). |

| Hi all , as an Australian , it spun me out a little to stand on the deck of Mighty Mo or the Arizona Memorial and see Japanese subs and ships in Pearl Harbor . We have the utmost respect for the whole Pearl Harbor experience , but they say time heals all wounds . Many Australians were very badly treated by the Japanese in WW2 , and you still can see some hostility by those directly affected . But overall Australians get along great with the Japanese , as they should. My wife and I have visited Japan 2 times as a tourist , and were treated extremely well by the locals . Never have we seen such a fantastic mix of the Ultra modern and the traditional . It was a fantastic destination . Of interest while in Hiroshima we visited the Hiroshima Museum and Memorial . We were approached by Japanese students to sign an anti Neuclear petition . It also asked your opinion about the USA using " The Bomb " on Japan . I don't think they liked my answers , as I completely agreed in its use , as a tool that saved probably a Million US and Allied troops and Millions of Japanese civilians and soldiers . As we know now that a US invasion on Japan was iminent . We have been to Hawaii 5 times now , and boy did we have a fat time there . My wife and I hired scooters , and deceided to ride to Pearl from Honolulu , all went well until we got stuck on the Admiral Nimitz Highway on scooters that toped out at 35 mph . | I buried my beloved grandfather 8 weeks ago. He was on the USS Tennessee, parked directly in front of the Arizona. He was a quiet and humble man, but a true Pearl Harbor survivor, and Korean War veteran..... and our hero. I like seeing you guys respect the memorial. Thanks for that. The hard-earned flag on his casket was a very emotional thing to see. |
