http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/09/28/AR2009092802136_pf.html

An article from the Washington Post that highlights the epidemic of distracted driving we are having. Just posting it as continual remider for all to be safe.

While I'm at it I was profiling this morning on my way to work. Fortunally none of these people were on the phone or texting or doing anything that was distracting. On my 31 mile journey to work I counted a total of six people who was exceeding the speed limit in excess of 15 mph. When I saw the first one, I didn't thing anything of it. Then I saw a second one a few more miles down the road zipping past me and so on. This occurred on the interstate, the parkway and then the turnpike, a total of six in all, fitting the same exact age group, ethnic and gender profile. No one else was doing the same as all was either obeying the speed limit or traveling with the flow.

If just made me think since none of them were the typical redneck white boys that often zip around here in their highridin' pick-up.

It has always been a zoo out there, cell use is just one more thing to watch and be aware of. Funny that we can bail out wall street in a couple days but we cant stop cell use behind the wheel with all the evidence of its contribution to accidents.
Passing a law banning phones would be no more effective than seat belt laws. Law abiding folks will obey the law, others will still use their phones.
As to those running excessive speeds? I don't believe for a second any gender or ethnic group is any worse than another. Purely demographics.......

We have the no cell phone while driving law in CA... it is pretty funny. It has not made one ounce of change on the road. I was run into the other lane twice last weekend by people making lane changes that were talking on the phone while driving. One didn't even react when they saw me the other just waved and smiled..... I am thinking of riding to work tomorrow... 45 miles in Los Angeles traffic- something I do very rarely. But the ride home I take up the coast and it usually turns into a 200 mile ride home

20 miles west of Chicago.
There is definite demographic, nation wide, of young white males driving pickup trucks in a dangerously aggresive manner.

No arguement here, but having travel this road for well over a year now and have been in the area for over 8 years, this struck me as being out of character...like there is a shift of demographics...

My real point is not debate what to do about the distracted driving, only to remind us again and again, ride safe.

varyder, your post is well received and no debate from me. I was commenting more to what was in the article about pushing new legislation, won't work. Awareness is your friend.....

I remember when the passed that here. They had to amend it to include texting. Why people thought it was okay to take their eyes off the road to text when flapping there lips while driving was illegal is beyond me. And as you said, it stopped for a while but when it isnt enforced...
