I was wondering if the ECM is somehow aware of gear selected. It seems no matter how smooth you drive in 2'nd or 3'rd the instantaneous fuel milage readout always lags considerably behind 4'th and 5'th. I guess one other possibility is the efficency of the bike in different gears and loss to friction if somehow the gears are cut differently.

Yes your ECM knows what gear it is in, and through the bus system comunicates with the trip computer. The ECM also modifies timing curves, and rev limiter based on gear selection
