In the market for a new seat / re do current seat / local upholsterer / etc.

Only had the stock seat since new over 100k on bike and have always felt like sitting on two planks. Went for a ride over the weekend about 2 hours and butt just pissed at me.

Seems to be a lot of options and a new seat, unknown comfort, is between 600 and over a 1000.

How does anyone get through the myriad of reviews and opinions to find the right seat?

Oh yeah, still need a seat the vinyl is tearing up pretty good.

I had mine recovered at about 90K miles. I traded back in October for a new CCT. The seat doesn't fit me correctly so I am making an appointment with a company called Bitchn Stichn in the Denver CO area. If you take the bike to them, they will have you sit on it and find the pressure points that need fixed and modify the seat to fit you. I had a friend do this last summer on a 7,000 mile ride. He rode 700 miles to them and his ass was pretty sore when he got there. He finished the rest of the ride after the modifications and the seat was not an issue again.

I had a Russell Day Long seat made for my Honda ST1300. It was a great seat. I have not found a need to change the stock VV seat. However, Mustang now makes a seat for the Vision. I have friends that say they are great seats.

you can buy a replacement seat cover from Ebay if you want to DIY the seat. They make 'em for the tour pack back rest too in you need that to match the seat.

cool, thanks, looking to possibly make the seat softer, or taller or something to change the hotpoints.

Had the seat remade after I had the wife's XVS650 seat reworked. She could only do 300Kms and the ride turned into a bum-numbing PITA thereafter. New seat from MJM in Goulburn, NSW at AUD 450, she could stay on the ride all day.

Mine includes harder, custom contoured padding and new covers, plus the matching backrest: absolutely a work of art. At 100kg, the standard seat padding just bottomed out onto the seat pan on bumps. The guys at MJM can work from photos as well.

Had a Russell Day Long done last year before a 3,000 ride, prior years before the new seat it was painful. last year was total comfort. Did a couple of 500+ days with no back or butt issues. I highly recommend the seat

Well my 02 cents. I recovered mine. Trim the foam the way I liked it. Added memory foam, seat heaters, seat back heater and back massager, butt massager, for driver and passenger seats, then used marine grade vinyl to recover it. stapled it down, then did embroidery on the seat back. Basically lowered the seat like we used to do old drag seats.

Heard about Bitchn Stichn before, didn't thought they are making seats that good.

The work I saw in his shop was pretty nice. I rode 700 miles home in 12 hours on the CCT. The comfort level went from a 3 to a 7. I added a sheep skin and that makes it about an 8.5

That sounds impressive. Gonna take a look at the bike and the seat right after we finished installing the new wheels and Toyo tires on the current truck project. The sheep skin should be a great additional.

I'm sure that there is a lot to be said for going to a custom seat, but I couldn't bring myself to spend that kind of money. I ordered the replacement cover off of ebay, replaced driver back support foam with much firmer and 'slightly' higher piece, then use beaded seat pads. Nice that besides being comfortable, the beads will keep you from sitting in any rain that ends up on the seat. One issue is that to use the heater it works better without the beads.

Good luck with whatever you end up going with.

The cost wasn't to bad for the Bitchn Stichn modifications. They spent about 6 hours shaping the seat to fit my backside and put the original cover on for $253. He threw in a free Tee shirt to boot. Now, if you wanted a new cover for the seat, he charges between $300 - $400 to do that.

The owner, Dan is a really nice guy. Exploring his shop is an adventure in itself.

It should worth it if the works give a different level of comfort.

Seat update. I had the opportunity to borrow an Ultimate seat for a week. After riding for 2 - 80 mile rides in a row, the foam hit bottom and I was riding on the pan. This past weekend, I had a guy loan me a Corbin seat. I installed it and rode for 2 hours without leaving the seat. This seat belongs in the hall of fame for torture. I was in some much pain that I swear there was a mistress with a crop under the seating beating on me.

Sunday, I reinstalled my modified seat. I have a long haired sheepskin that looks like it came out of a 70's Shagon wagon that I added for another layer. We took off on a 450 mile round trip lunch ride and I am 100% happy with the Bitchn Stichn seat. We were on the bikes for right at 10 hours and I was able to ride 100 miles at a time. That is all I can expect from an old guy like me.
