What's better than a car tire??

A car tire filled with nitrogen!!!!!!!!!!!! ??

I don't buy into the Nitrogen filled tire for street application thinking, for racing OK. Just remember that our atmosphere ("AIR") we breath is made up of 78% nitrogen, 21% oxygen, and the rest is small amounts of argon, CO2, helium. When you fill your tire with an "air" you get almost 80% nitrogen in the tire anyway, I won't pay special prices for something that is not really beneficial.

It's because of this:

<img src="http://i40.tinypic.com/dx0p61.jpg">

The above is a caricature of Don posting late last night/early this morning....

Now that's funny!

My local Vic dealer would not put on tire, but independent motorcycle shop had no issues. They do a lot of trike conversions, so might be something to look for as a clue the shop is comfortable with installing CTs.

If you decide to use a non Vic shop to install your car tire, be sure to give them a copy of the tire removal/install procedure as well as the belt alignment procedure to ensure that the torque specs/belt tension specs are used. It'll bite you in the ass if they screw it up. Inspect everything before you pay the bill!

Remove the wheel yourself and take the wheel/tire along with the new tire to the shop. Apparently, you don't need to loosen up the tension.

The reason Rollin was using nitrogen was cause he left his house in WI. road down to the keys and then up to Alaska so I'm guessing he wanted all the air he could get.
Nitrogen is slower to leak out of your tire then normal air.

Correct! And nitrogen is dryer so the pressure doesn't change as much with temperature change.

On this years ride I am preparing for a one day 80 degree temperature change.

I couldn't guess, but it has to be a place where there is dramatic change in altitude. I've done the 60 degree change in a day, that fun, especially when it starts off at 50 degrees and then goes up...

Yeah. Mine was going from 41 degrees to 106 degrees, coming down out of the Rockies on the east side in middle August, into a summer heat wave. The riding conditions changed from running the heated gear to wearing a T shirt and stopping every 100 miles for more Gatoraide.

Ready for the next adventure.

Nitrogen filled run flat snow tire, spare gasoline, GPS, Spot Tracker and an EZPass.

The bike is ready, I hope I am!

Just call me cheap and lazy; works for me. I am happy with the Michelin alpin I have mounted on the back of my Vision, but I question the better stopping distance argument for the CT. I'm not in the habit of sliding to a stop dragging one or both tires down the street locked up. But I am kind of in the habit of starting from a dead stop rather rapidly and there is no doubt in my mind that the Michelin breaks loose more easily than my E3's did. So if my Michelin has less traction in go ahead, I'm guessing it would have less traction in braking mode. This could be an increased hazard with the car tire. I've had a couple of freeway rear wheel lock-ups with previous bikes, which got my adrenalin pumping.
Harder rubber = less traction, gotta agree. It would help make an intelligent decision if the tire manufacturers were required to include the coefficient of friction along with the other tire specs.

Incidentally, I, too, wore a hole in my front fender with a Metzler 880. Years ago, I put one on the back of my Harley and could feel an improved ride right off the bat.

Blue Sky Guy it depends on the rubber compound of the tire you bought. If you bought one with a softer compound it will be comparable to the soft compound of a motorcycle tire. People are always looking at the higher treadwear rating when looking for tires to go darkside, but the opposite is what you really should be looking for. A soft car tire will still last longer than a motorcycle tire.

Where do you find out the tires "softness" rating?

The wintersport tires are a softer compound than a MT. Those tires wear out quicker though, only expect 18-20k miles out of them.
I have recently switched back from a Dunlop Wintersport 175/60 to an E3 an have notice a drop in traction when accelerating. I do find the E3 a little more agile. The agility of the Wintersport was similar to a worn E3.
The E3 was free, when it wears out, I may go back to the Wintersport for the 'Runflat' safety if I can find one.

i just use my 10 yr old sears motorcycle jack to help me Remove the wheel(s) myself and them bring them to the place that installs my tires.. way cheaper. Doing this has paid for the jack 30 times over in the past 10 years. btw i have also gone to the darkside on my last 3 bikes, 2 of them being Vision's

Instead of using the Metzler that wears a hole in your finder use a Bridgestone 140x70R18 with a "V" rating. handles good. Actually a Yamaha rear tire
