On our ride today I had an encounter with a Deer, flying turkey, 5 dogs and a turkey buzzard. The turkey buzzard decided to leave his meal on the edge of the road a little late and fly right into my riding path. He hit below the fairing and spun off into the ditch on the other side of the road. All I had time to do was duck. I had hit the horn several times to give it warning but he must have been to hungry to give up eating. RIP turkey buzzard. Did I mention that they look like a 747 up close? No damage to the bike upon inspection. Underwear still clean.

Yikes!

I came around a corner on my way home from work one day and there was a buzzard dining on a deer carcass, he took off from his meal and flew directly in my path, I ducked and just barely missed him.

They eat so much they have a hard time getting off the ground sometimes. They are big and ugly.

That must have been quite a shock, good thing he didn't hit you in the chest, it might have knocked you off the bike.

They are big, nasty, and if you get close enough, they smell like death.

Down in Texas. we call that "Crazy Ivan" . Glad you survived without injury. My dad had a great story about them. He was out hunting after a storm and came across a downed nest with a Buzzard chick. He thought how cool to have a pet buzzard. picked it up and put it inside his jacket but after a few minutes the chick regurgitated it's last meal. Can you imagine partly digested roadkill smell.....

I second what conn-e-rot said! I hit one in a company truck years ago and it puked on the windshield and I thought the smell would never go away.

chesshiretuna - 2013-06-09 8:22 AM Down in Texas. we call that "Crazy Ivan" .. Crazy Ivan is a term reserved for a maneuver that is performed by Russian submarines. In the cat and mouse game between American and Russian submarines, when a Russian suspects he is being followed by an American sub, he performs a violent maneuver that will bring him right into the path of the sub following him, that is called a Crazy Ivan by the US submariners. It forces the American sub to take evasive actions to avoid a collision.

Yes they are a protected species. They are thicker than rabbits in southern IA. You can't prevent them from committing suicide though.
