Austin Texas Yaaaalll | 2011 Vision that recently had a top end rebuild. New Cylinders, Pistons and everything that the oil touched in the top end. Don't ask me why, its a long story that I have already told here. So now I have it back and have put 2K miles on it and I am thinking about putting cams, upper air filter, and fuel controller. I already have a K&N front air filter, D&D exhaust and a stage2/level2 re-flash of the ECU, which is what D&D ask for after install. I am getting 38 mpg in current configuration and would like to be in the 45 mpg zone. A little more power wouldn't hurt too. So what do you think:
1.) PCV vs. Lloyds VC3
A dealer down here quoted me $2,300.00 to put in air filter, cams, fuel controller and dyno time. Said he had to lower motor to put cams in and it took 9 hours. Seems like a lot of money to me. I have done a search and read some threads about PCV being RPM based fuel controller vs. VC3 being a fuel adder. Still not sure which one is best for me. One thing I know I want to set it and forget about it. I don't want to spend much time reading tables and trying to tweak it. |

Kevin or Rylan can do a set of cams in less than 4 hours......I had the VFCIII first for my fueler...I did not like the features or the way my Vision ran it would spit and sput BAD!!!! , so I went with a PC-V like the control much better PLUS it allows for 500 more RPM's you say pffft 500 RPM....It means a lot when you get on it with cams...You hit 6K REAL FAST with cams in 1st and 2nd gears sometimes 3rd!! |

| Rylan is in Iowa and Kevin is in Florida. Kevin went to Ca. a few months back cause there were 4 guys that wanted cam's and a fuller, Don't remember what the price was but it was way less then what your dealer told you. If you could find 3 other guys I know either one of them will come to you |

| My dealer in Dallas and one in Houston quoted me 22 hours, said they had to remove the engine. I told them I know better, that people in other parts of the country do it 4 hours. "WE REMOVE THE MOTOR" was their response. I'm curious, how would they lower the motor?

| He tried but I knew better. I decided to do the cams myself. I'm going to wait and install Lloyds new cams.

I've seen him do it in 2 1/2 hours, all the while entertaining questions from onlookers at the AVR ! I think the 4 hours would have to be if he were blindfolded with one arm tied behind his back.
Adding in the fuel controller, takes some extra time, especially for a PC-V and even more for the Autotune module.

The dealers are going by the "book procedure", which does call for lowering the motor and does take a lot of time. Lloyd came up with a shortcut that he, Kevin, Rylan, and others who are very familiar with changing cams on a Vision use. Using Lloyd's shortcut, they can do the job in a lot less time. Having done several of the swaps and being very familiar with the procedure, these guys can whip one out pretty quick.
I wouldn't say the dealers are necessarily trying to "rip you off". Doing it "by the book" would probably take at least 9 hours. They just don't know Lloyd's trick.
Rylan did mine in about 3 1/2 hours and that included taking time to do a temporary repair to a torn throttle body adapter that he found, and a road test and fine tune after the installation of cams, intake, and VFCIII. Very happy and highly recommended.
I had Lloyd reprogram my ECU about a month later, after I got tired of hitting the stock rev-limiter all the time after the upgrades. Also highly recommended.
As to the question about fuel mileage, I consistently get 40 or better when on trips. Riding 75 or 80 MPH with some tailwind will produce mid 40s. I once got 52 MPG while cruising 100 MPH, with a strong tailwind coming across a sparsely populated part of Colorado. When riding with my usual trip companions, who ride a GL1800, I almost always beat the Goldwing by a couple of MPG in any conditions. The exception was that blast across Colorado. The GW's mileage suffered at those high speeds, while the Vision thrived on it. That time, I beat the GW by 10MPG. The Vision's true overdrive really shines in those types of situations.
Having taken several trips with the Goldwing alongside, I can say that the GW's "sweet spot" is around 3000 RPM or 70 MPH. The Vision's "sweet spot" is also around 3000 RPM, but that's 80 MPH, due to the Vision having overdrive.
