Subject: Clicking noise from rear wheel

I've noticed a clicking noise from my rear wheel when driving thru an enclosed parking garage or past a brick wall. I was worried that it might be a bearing issue but it didn't sound like metal on metal. My 2nd thought was that maybe a rock was stuck in the belt. Belt was clear and not much wear @ 16K. I stuck my fingers onto the pulley and found that the chrome was flaking off between the teeth.

Question: Should I remove the wheel and scrape off all the chrome on the teeth or let the belt wear the chrome off. I don't want to risk damaging the belt. Anyone with a chrome pulley experienced this problem?
